Choosing gravel for a walkway looks like an aesthetic decision and is actually a mechanical one. The stone you pick determines whether the path stays where you put it, whether a stroller can cross it, and whether you will be raking it back off the lawn twice a summer for the rest of your life.
There are really only four serious candidates: pea gravel, decomposed granite, small angular crushed stone, and stone dust. They behave very differently underfoot, and the difference comes down to two properties — whether the stone is rounded or angular, and whether the material contains fines that let it lock together when compacted.
Buying tip: The word to use at the yard is “angular.” Rounded stone rolls and migrates; angular stone with fines compacts into a firm surface. If the pile looks like river pebbles, it will not stay in your path.
The Four Options, Side by Side
Every walkway gravel is a trade between comfort and stability. Rounded stone is soft on bare feet and terrible for footing. Angular material with fines is firm and stable but harder underfoot and it tracks indoors. Nothing gives you both, so pick the failure mode you can live with.

Pea Gravel: Lovely, and It Will Not Stay Put
Pea gravel is the material people want and the one that disappoints most often. The rounded 3/8-inch stones are genuinely pleasant barefoot, they drain instantly, they come in warm natural colors, and at $30 to $60 per ton they are cheap. On a casual garden path that nobody uses in a hurry, pea gravel is a fine choice.
The problem is that round stones cannot interlock. Every footstep pushes some of them sideways, so the path develops ruts down the middle and berms at the edges, and the stone slowly migrates into the lawn where it eventually meets your mower blade. Keep it 2 inches deep — not 3 or 4, which makes walking feel like wading — and install a solid edge restraint on both sides. Steel, aluminium or a mortared soldier course all work; plastic bender board is the minimum.
Pea gravel also fails on any slope above about 5 percent. It simply rolls downhill. If your route has a real grade, use decomposed granite with steps, or switch materials entirely.
Decomposed Granite: The Best All-Round Path Material
Decomposed granite is weathered granite that has broken down into a mix of coarse grit and fine particles. Compacted, it forms a firm, tan, almost pavement-like surface with a soft natural look. At $40 to $80 per ton it is more expensive than pea gravel, but it is the material most professional garden paths use, and for good reason: it walks well in shoes, in sandals and with a stroller.
Its weakness is water. Uncoated DG erodes in heavy rain and forms gullies on slopes, and it can get soft in prolonged wet weather. Stabilized DG, which has a binder mixed in, resists both and is what to specify for any path that must stay firm year-round. Lay it 2 to 3 inches deep over a compacted base and compact it in lifts. Crushed Stone and Stone Dust
Angular crushed stone in a 3/8-inch size is the workhorse. The sharp faces wedge against each other, so the surface stays where you put it even under regular traffic, and it drains freely. At $25 to $45 per ton it is the cheapest firm option. The downsides are noise, a slightly harsh feel through thin shoes, and a tendency to lodge in boot treads and get carried indoors.
Stone dust, also sold as screenings or quarry dust, compacts into the firmest surface of the four — nearly as solid as a dirt road that has been rolled. It is the traditional setting bed under flagstone for exactly this reason. As a finished walking surface it works, but it drains poorly, holds water, gets muddy at the edges and turns to grey dust on your shoes in a dry spell. Size matters more than most people realise. Stone larger than about half an inch never feels settled underfoot and rolls under a shoe; anything below a quarter inch behaves like coarse sand and washes. The 3/8-inch band is the sweet spot for walking surfaces, which is why both pea gravel and the best crushed walkway stone land there.
The Layer Underneath Decides Everything
No walkway gravel performs well laid straight onto soil. Excavate 4 to 6 inches, put down 3 to 4 inches of compacted crusher run, then the decorative layer on top. Without that base, the top stone presses into soft ground, mud pumps up through it after rain, and within two seasons the path is a muddy trough with stones floating in it.
Edge restraint is the other non-negotiable. Gravel has no tensile strength — it holds its shape only because something at the perimeter refuses to let it spread. Steel edging, a soldier course of brick, or timber all work. Skipping the edge is the single most common reason a gravel path looks tired within a year.
Strollers, Wheelchairs and Walkers
If wheels have to cross the path, the answer narrows sharply. Pea gravel is effectively impassable for a wheelchair and a genuine struggle with a stroller; small caster wheels sink and steer sideways. Loose crushed stone is better but still unreliable.
Stabilized decomposed granite compacted to a firm surface is the only loose material that reliably supports wheels, and it is what public parks and botanical gardens use for accessible routes. Build it at least 36 inches wide, 48 inches if two people need to pass, keep the running slope under 5 percent, and edge both sides so the material cannot spread and thin out. If true year-round accessibility matters, though, be honest: stepping stones or a paved paver surface will outperform any gravel.
Bottom Line
For most walkways, stabilized decomposed granite is the right answer: firm underfoot, natural looking, handles wheels, and it stays put. Choose 3/8-inch angular crushed stone if you want the cheapest surface that will not migrate and do not mind the crunch. Use pea gravel only for low-traffic decorative paths on flat ground, always 2 inches deep and always with a real edge. Keep stone dust underneath the surface, not on it.
