Decomposed granite — DG to anyone who has priced it — is weathered granite that has broken down into a mix of coarse sand, fine gravel, and rock dust. It is the warm, tan-to-rust surfacing you see on high-end garden paths, wine-country patios, and dog runs, and it comes in three forms that behave nothing alike: loose DG, stabilized DG, and resin-bound DG. Buy the wrong one for the job and you either get a surface that erodes into your lawn after the first hard rain, or you pay a premium for stabilization you did not need.
All three start from the same quarried material. What changes is whether — and how — a binder is added to hold the fines in place once foot traffic and weather start working on it.
Loose DG: Cheapest, and It Will Migrate
Loose decomposed granite is just the crushed, screened material spread and compacted with a plate compactor — no additives. Fresh out of the bag it looks fantastic: a tight, natural-looking surface with a slight give underfoot. The problem shows up over the following season. Rain carries the fine dust to the low points, foot traffic kicks loose material onto adjacent lawn or pavement, and on any slope over about 2% you will find yourself raking DG back uphill every few months.
Loose DG is the right call on flat, low-traffic ground — a garden bed path, a fire pit surround, an area you are willing to top off once a year. It is the cheapest of the three options and the easiest to repair; more material is the entire fix.
Stabilized DG: Binder Mixed Through the Material
Stabilized DG has a powdered polymer binder blended into the material before or during compaction. Water activates the binder, and as the path cures over a few days it locks the fines together into a semi-rigid crust while still reading as natural stone. The surface sheds far less dust, resists rutting from wheelbarrows and bike tires, and holds a slope up to roughly 10% without significant erosion.
The tradeoff is upfront labor and cost: it needs to be watered in and compacted correctly, and a botched cure leaves soft spots. Stabilized DG is the standard choice for walking paths with real traffic, patios, and any DG surface on a slope.
Resin-Bound DG: A Hard, Sealed Surface
Resin-bound DG goes a step further, mixing the aggregate with a liquid resin (usually a UV-stable polyurethane) that cures into a hard, porous, almost pavement-like surface. It is troweled in by a contractor rather than raked and compacted, and it stops migration and dust entirely. This is the option for high-traffic commercial paths, driveways, or ADA-accessible routes where a firm, stable surface is required by code. It is also the most expensive by a wide margin, and it cannot be simply topped off if it wears — repairs mean cutting out and re-pouring a section.
Buying tip: Ask your supplier whether “stabilized DG” means the binder is pre-mixed into the bagged or bulk material, or whether it is a separate liquid stabilizer you apply after spreading. Pre-mixed is more forgiving for a DIY install; liquid-applied gives a harder finish but punishes uneven watering.

Stabilized DG is the better pick for a dog run specifically — loose DG gets dug up fast by a bored dog, and the compacted surface is gentler on joints than crushed stone. Color and Regional Variation
DG’s color comes directly from the parent granite, so it varies by quarry region rather than by processing. California and the Southwest produce warm gold, tan, and rust tones that dominate drought-tolerant landscaping in those states. Southeastern quarries often yield grayer or pinkish material. Weathering shifts the color slightly over the first few months as dust settles and the surface oxidizes, then it stabilizes. Sealed resin-bound DG holds its as-installed color longest since it is not exposed to the same surface erosion as loose or stabilized DG.

Loose DG needs the most upkeep: rake it periodically to redistribute material that traffic pushes toward the edges, and plan on topping it off every year or two as fines wash away. Weeds are also more of an issue in loose DG than in the stabilized or resin versions, since seeds can root in the looser surface — a pre-emergent herbicide applied in spring cuts down on this significantly.
Stabilized DG needs far less — mainly an occasional light re-wetting and re-compacting of any spot that develops a crack or pothole, using leftover material from the original install so the patch blends in. Resin-bound DG needs the least day-to-day maintenance of the three but the most specialized repair if it does fail, since a cracked or lifted section usually has to be cut out and professionally re-poured rather than patched by hand.
Installing and Ordering
For paths and patios, excavate 4–6 inches, add 2–3 inches of compacted crusher run or road base as a foundation, then finish with 2 inches of DG compacted to about 1.5 inches. Skipping the base layer is the single most common reason a DG path fails within a year — without it, the surface flexes, cracks, and erodes from underneath no matter how good the DG itself is. Edging (steel, aluminum, or paver) is worth adding on any loose or stabilized installation; it is what keeps material from creeping into the lawn.
Decomposed granite runs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, slightly lighter than crushed stone.
