Every quarry stocks a wall of options, but a driveway only asks two questions of its stone: can the layer carry a vehicle without rutting, and can the surface shed rain without turning to soup? Different grades answer different halves of that, which is why the best driveways are built from two of them.

The logic: crusher run’s fines lock under a compactor into a rigid platform, but those same fines pump to the surface as mud in prolonged rain. Ordering and Placing Driveway Stone

Order the base with the full 15% allowance — compaction consumes real volume, and a base that finishes thin fails first at the edges. The surface course can run a leaner 10%. Spread the base in 2-inch lifts and compact each pass with a plate compactor or roller, keeping a slight crown so water runs to the edges rather than down the wheel tracks. Tip the surface stone, rake to an even 2 inches, and let traffic do the final seating.
