2. #57 / #67 Stone — Best as a Layer, Not the Whole Driveway

#57 and #67 are washed, open-graded stone with no fines, which makes them the opposite of crusher run in behavior: they never compact into a solid mass, but they drain water almost instantly. Used alone as a driveway surface, that means a permanently loose, crunchy top layer that migrates under tire spin and needs periodic raking — fine for a low-traffic path, frustrating for a daily-use driveway.

3. Asphalt Millings — The Budget Pavement Look

Asphalt millings — ground-up recycled asphalt, sometimes sold as “asphalt gravel” — compact into a dark, remarkably hard surface that looks close to real pavement once cured, especially on a warm day when residual bitumen softens slightly and helps the material knit together. It is a strong performer for structural stability and holds up well to vehicle traffic.

Where Millings Fall Short

Availability is regional and inconsistent — not every quarry or paving contractor carries it, and quality varies by source batch. It also runs warmer and softer in direct summer sun than stone, which can leave shallow ruts under a parked car’s tires on the hottest days. Millings are worth calling around for if a contractor near you sells them; just do not expect the tidy pricing and consistency you get ordering stone from a quarry.

4. Crushed Concrete — Nearly as Good, Noticeably Cheaper

Recycled crushed concrete is demolition concrete crushed and screened into a dense-graded product that behaves a lot like crusher run — it contains fines, compacts firmly, and drains poorly on purpose, which is what a driveway surface wants. The main draw is price: crushed concrete typically runs 20–40% cheaper than virgin crushed stone because it skips quarrying entirely.

The catch is consistency. Because it is a recycled product, gradation and leftover fines (bits of old rebar, occasional larger chunks) vary more between suppliers than a quarried, screened stone does. Ask to see or sample a load before a large order, and confirm the supplier screens out rebar and large debris. 5. Pea Gravel — Attractive, But a Mistake for a Real Driveway

Buying tip: If a landscaper or big-box store suggests pea gravel for a driveway because it “looks nicer,” push back. Pea gravel belongs on paths and accent beds, not under daily vehicle traffic.

Pea gravel’s rounded, pebble-sized stones are genuinely attractive and comfortable underfoot, which is exactly why it gets suggested for driveways — and exactly why it performs so poorly there. Round stones roll rather than lock together, so tires push pea gravel into ruts and washboard patterns within weeks, and every turn of the steering wheel scatters more of it onto the lawn, into the garage, and toward storm drains. It has essentially no structural bearing capacity compared to angular crushed stone, and a plate compactor does almost nothing to improve that — the stones simply cannot interlock the way angular material does.

Pea gravel can work for the last visual layer of a driveway only if it sits in a small quantity over a properly compacted crusher run base, confined tightly by edging, and even then it needs frequent raking and top-offs. How Much Depth Each Option Needs

Depth requirements track directly with how well a material compacts. Dense-graded materials need less total depth because they interlock; loose stone needs more depth to feel stable underfoot at all.

Climate-Specific Recommendations

The ranking above holds up nationally, but local climate shifts the details of what performs best and how much maintenance a given material demands.

  • Heavy freeze-thaw regions (Northeast, Upper Midwest, Mountain West): crusher run or crushed concrete, compacted in full 4–6 inch depth over a base that has been graded to shed water away from the driveway. Installation Best Practices: Getting the Base Right

Material choice matters less than most homeowners think if the base underneath is built wrong. A few installation fundamentals apply no matter which material from the ranking above you choose:

  • Excavate first. Remove topsoil and organic matter down to stable subgrade before adding any stone — skipping this is the single most common cause of a driveway that sinks and ruts within a year, regardless of what gets put on top of it.
