A gravel walkway is the cheapest hard surface you can put in a yard and the easiest to get wrong. Nearly every failed path comes down to the same two omissions: no compacted base under the pretty stone, and no edging to hold it. Difficulty is easy, a 30 ft path takes one solid day for one person, and materials run roughly $4–$9 per square foot including edging. Get the layering right and the path will still read as a clean line in ten years instead of a vague gravel smear in the grass.

How Wide, and What Stone?
Width is a comfort decision, not an aesthetic one. A single-file utility path can be 2 ft. A main walkway people actually use should be 3 ft minimum, and 4 ft if two people will walk side by side or you push a wheelbarrow or mower along it. Narrower than 3 ft and people walk on the grass beside it, which is how a path ends up twice its intended width anyway.
For the surface, angular crushed stone in the 3/8 in range is the right default — the sharp faces knit together underfoot and stay put on slopes. Decomposed granite compacts into an even firmer surface but tracks into the house on shoes. Pea gravel looks and feels great but its rounded shape means it rolls, migrates, and is genuinely difficult to walk on in dress shoes; if you want it anyway, use deep edging and keep the run flat. Pro tip: Lay the route out with a garden hose and leave it there for two days before you dig. Walk it at night, in the rain, and carrying something. Curves that look elegant on paper often cut across the line people naturally take, and they will shortcut across your lawn forever.
Step-by-Step Build
- Mark the route and excavate 4–6 in of soil. Paint both edges of the path, then dig out all sod, roots, and topsoil down to firm subsoil — 4 in for a 2 in base plus 2 in of surface stone, 6 in on soft or wet ground where the base needs to be thicker. Keep the trench floor roughly parallel to the finished grade so the layers stay consistent depth for the whole run.
- Slope or crown the path for drainage. A walkway must shed water. Either crown the center about 1/2 in higher than the edges, or pitch the whole path 1–2% to one side toward a garden bed. A dead-flat path in a shallow trench becomes a drainage channel in the first heavy rain, and moving water is what carries loose gravel away.
- Lay woven geotextile fabric across the full trench. Run it up the sides and overlap seams by 12 in. The fabric’s job is separation — it keeps soil from pumping up into your stone and keeps the stone from disappearing down into soft ground. It also cuts weeds substantially, though it is not a permanent weed barrier; seeds that blow in and germinate in the surface layer still need pulling.
- Install the edging before the stone goes in. Set steel, aluminum, or composite edging along both sides with its top about 1/2 in above finished gravel height, staked every 2–3 ft and more tightly on curves. - Place and compact 2–4 in of crusher run in 2-inch lifts. Crusher run contains fines that lock the aggregate together, which is exactly why it belongs underneath and not on top. Spread 2 in, mist lightly, run the plate compactor in overlapping passes until it stops rutting, then repeat if you are going deeper. - Spread 2 in of surface stone and rake it level. Two inches is the sweet spot: deep enough to fully cover the base and read as a finished surface, shallow enough that you are not wading through loose stone with every step. Anything over 3 in feels like walking in sand. Rake it flat, walk the whole path once to find soft spots, top up, and give angular stone a single light compaction pass to knit it together. Do not compact pea gravel — it will not lock and you will only push it around.
Keeping It Looking New
A properly built gravel path needs very little, but it is not zero. Once a year, rake the surface stone back toward the center to undo the outward drift that foot traffic causes, and pull any weeds that have rooted in the top layer before they get established. Expect to add a thin top-up of surface stone every three to five years — roughly a quarter of your original surface quantity — because some stone inevitably gets kicked out, tracked away on shoes, and pressed down into the base. If a section stays soft or muddy after rain, the base under it was either too thin or never compacted; dig that section out, add crusher run in 2 in lifts, and re-top it. Do not simply pile more surface stone on a soft spot, because loose stone over a failed base just gets thicker and softer.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Dumping decorative gravel straight onto soil. Without a compacted base it presses into the ground and vanishes within two seasons.
- Skipping edging to save money. Edging costs a fraction of what you will spend re-topping a path that keeps spreading.
- Going too deep with surface stone. A 4 in loose layer is unpleasant to walk on and no more durable than 2 in over a real base.
- Building flat in a trench. The path becomes the low point and water routes down it.
- Using rounded stone on any slope over about 3%. It migrates downhill with every footstep — use angular stone or terrace the run with steps.
Bottom Line
Build a gravel walkway in layers, not in one dump: excavate 4–6 in below the topsoil, separate with fabric, set the edging first, compact 2–4 in of crusher run in 2 in lifts, and finish with 2 in of angular surface stone. Make it at least 3 ft wide and give it a crown or a cross-slope so water leaves rather than runs along it. Do that and annual maintenance is a rake and a wheelbarrow of top-up stone every few years.
