How to Build a Gravel Driveway in 7 Steps

A gravel driveway is one of the best value projects in residential construction, but only if you build it in layers. Skip the base and you get a stone-topped mud pit by spring. Done right, expect a weekend of hard work for a typical 12 x 50 ft driveway, a rented plate compactor or roller, and roughly $600–$1,500 in stone depending on local prices. The structure is simple: 4 inches of compacted crusher run as the base, 2 inches of #57 stone as the surface, with geotextile fabric underneath. On soft or wet ground, plan for 6–8 inches of base instead.

The quick math: one cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, so a 12 x 50 ft driveway (600 sq ft) needs about 7.5 yd³ for 4 inches of base and 3.7 yd³ for 2 inches of surface. Crusher run weighs about 1.5 tons per cubic yard, so that base order is roughly 11 tons.

Step 1: Lay Out and Excavate

Stake both edges of the driveway and run string lines. Make it at least 10–12 feet wide for a single lane; add flare at the road entrance. Then excavate 6 inches below your finished grade — deeper (8–10 inches) if the subsoil is soft clay or the area stays wet. You are removing topsoil and organic material entirely; gravel placed on topsoil will pump and rut no matter how well you compact it. Save usable topsoil for the shoulders.

Step 2: Grade and Compact the Subgrade

Shape the excavated dirt to roughly the final profile, with a slight crown down the centerline and fall toward the sides. Compact the bare subgrade with the plate compactor. If it pumps or ruts under the machine, it is too wet or too soft — let it dry, or dig out the soft pocket and fill it with crusher run before continuing. Fixing soft spots now costs one wheelbarrow load; fixing them later costs you the driveway.

Step 3: Roll Out Geotextile Fabric

Lay woven geotextile fabric over the full excavation, overlapping seams 12–18 inches. The fabric does two jobs: it keeps the stone from punching down into the soil, and it keeps soil fines from migrating up into the stone. On firm, well-drained subgrades some builders skip it; on clay or anywhere soft it easily doubles the life of the base. Step 4: Build the Crusher Run Base in Lifts

Spread crusher run in 2-inch lifts, compacting each lift before adding the next. A 4-inch base means two lifts; a 6–8 inch base on soft ground means three or four. Do not dump 4 inches and compact once — a plate compactor only densifies the top couple of inches, and everything below stays loose and settles later. Lightly mist each lift with a hose before compacting; damp (not soaked) material locks up much tighter. Step 5: Cut the Crown

As you place the final base lift, shape a crown: the centerline should sit higher than the edges so water sheds sideways instead of running down the wheel paths. Target a 2–4% cross slope — on a 12-foot-wide driveway that is roughly 1.5 to 3 inches of fall from center to edge. A flat driveway holds water, and standing water is the root cause of nearly every pothole. On a driveway that runs downhill, the crown matters even more, because it breaks up the long water run before it can gather speed and cut channels.

Step 6: Spread the #57 Surface Course

Top the compacted base with 2 inches of #57 stone — clean, angular, roughly golf-ball-and-smaller crushed stone. It drains fast, stays put underfoot, and gives you that classic crunch. Rake it to follow the crown you built into the base. #57 will not compact into a slab the way crusher run does; it locks together loosely and works as a wearing course you can regrade and top up over the years. Step 7: Compact, Check Drainage, and Drive On It

Run the plate compactor over the surface course once to seat it into the base. Then test the drainage: run a hose or wait for rain and watch where water goes. It should sheet off both edges and never pool. Fix low spots now with a rake and a few shovelfuls of stone. After that, drive on it — wheel traffic over the first few weeks finishes the compaction better than any machine.

Driveways That Cross a Slope: Culverts and Cross-Drainage

A driveway that runs straight up or down a hill is one problem; a driveway that crosses a hillside — running roughly level while the ground falls away on one side — is a different one. Water coming down the slope hits the uphill edge of the driveway and has nowhere to go unless you give it a path. Ignore this and every rainstorm turns your driveway into the ditch.

  • Cut a ditch on the uphill side. A shallow swale running parallel to the driveway catches hillside runoff before it crosses the surface. Keep it a foot or two off the edge of the base so it does not undermine the shoulder.
  • Install a culvert wherever the ditch needs to cross the driveway. A 12–15 inch corrugated culvert pipe, buried under the base with at least a foot of cover, carries the ditch water under the driving surface instead of over it. Set the culvert on a slight fall (1–2%) so it does not silt up, and always run its inlet and outlet ends lower than the driveway grade, with rock armor at both ends to stop erosion.
  • Add cross-drains on long grades. On a driveway running straight downhill for more than about 100 feet, water gathers speed and starts cutting the surface into a washboard or a channel. A shallow diagonal dip or a buried cross-culvert every 75–100 feet bleeds water off to the side before it can build momentum.
  • Rock-armor the outlet. Wherever a culvert or ditch discharges, the concentrated flow will cut a gully in bare soil within one season. Skipping cross-drainage on a sloped driveway is one of the most expensive mistakes in this whole project, because the fix after the fact means tearing out finished base to bury a culvert that should have gone in during Step 1.

Cost of Materials for a 600 Sq Ft Driveway

Prices vary by region and delivery distance, but here is a realistic materials-only breakdown for the 12 x 50 ft example used throughout this guide. Labor, equipment rental, and any culvert pipe are extra.

Mistakes That Kill Gravel Driveways

  • One thick lift instead of 2-inch lifts. The bottom never compacts, and the driveway settles into ruts within a season.
  • Gravel straight on topsoil. Organic soil compresses and pumps mud up through the stone. Excavate first, every time.
  • Using round river gravel as a surface. Round stones roll under tires. Use angular crushed stone that interlocks.
  • No crown. A dead-flat driveway ponds water, and every pond becomes a pothole.
  • Under-ordering. Delivery fees make second loads expensive. Calculate compacted volume, then add 10–20%.
