A stone fire pit is a genuinely easy weekend build — dig, level, stack, done. What makes it a safety project rather than a decorating project is stone selection and drainage, and those are the two things almost every online tutorial gets wrong. Plan on half a day, one helper for moving block, and $150–$500 in materials depending on whether you use wall block or natural stone. Before you start, check your municipality’s open-burning rules and any HOA restrictions; some areas require a minimum setback from structures or ban wood burning outright on certain days.

The Stone Rule That Matters Most
Critical safety warning: Never use river rock, creek stone, or any wet or porous stone inside the fire bowl. Water trapped in the pores turns to steam when heated, and the stone can crack or spall violently — throwing hot fragments outward. This applies to any stone that has been sitting in wet ground, including sandstone, limestone, shale, and anything you picked up from a streambed.
Use firebrick, refractory block, or a steel fire ring for anything in direct contact with flame. Dense quarried granite and purpose-made concrete retaining wall block are fine for the outer facing, which stays comparatively cool. River rock is beautiful and completely acceptable as decorative surround stone in the seating area — just keep it outside the bowl. Sizing and Clearances
An inner bowl diameter of 36–44 in is the practical range. Smaller than 36 in and a normal armload of firewood will not fit; larger than about 44 in and the fire feels distant from the seats and burns through wood fast. Wall height of 12–18 in above grade contains the fire without blocking the view or the heat — higher walls trap heat inside the pit instead of radiating it to people.
For clearances: keep at least 10 ft between the pit and any structure, fence, deck, or overhanging tree limb, and more if local code says so. Never build a wood-burning pit on or directly beside a wood deck. Leave 3 ft of clear walking space around the outside of the pit for seating, so a 40 in pit wants a roughly 11–12 ft diameter patio or gravel area around it.
Step-by-Step Build
- Pick the site and scribe the circle. Choose a spot clear of overhead branches and at least 10 ft from anything that burns, ideally out of the prevailing wind path from the house. Drive a stake at the center, tie a string at half your outer diameter, and scribe the circle with marking paint. Confirm no utilities or septic lines run beneath.
- Excavate 6–8 in and level the floor. Dig out sod and topsoil across the full circle, plus about 6 in past the outer wall line so the block sits on prepared ground rather than on the edge of a hole. Rake the floor flat and check it with a level laid across a straight board. On soft ground, add 2 in of compacted crusher run before continuing.
- Place 3 in of gravel for drainage. Spread #57 or similar crushed stone across the floor and tamp it flat. This layer is not decorative — it lets rainwater drain out from under the bowl instead of pooling. A fire pit that holds water rots its own base, freezes and heaves the first course in winter, and makes lighting a fire miserable for a week after any rain.
- Set the first course dead level and check it all the way around. Lay the outer ring of block or stone on the tamped gravel, working around the circle and adjusting each unit with a torpedo level front-to-back and side-to-side. Check level across opposite sides of the ring with a 4-ft level too. A first course that is out by half an inch produces a visibly tilted pit five courses later, and there is no fixing it from above.
- Build the fire-rated liner inside the outer ring. Stack firebrick or drop in a steel fire ring insert so nothing but rated material faces the flame. Leave a small air gap — roughly 1/2 to 1 in — between the liner and the outer stone so the two can expand at different rates without cracking each other. Do not fill that gap with mortar; loose sand or fine gravel is fine if you want it closed off.
- Stack the remaining courses, then cap them. Run courses up to 12–18 in above grade, staggering vertical joints so no seam runs straight up the wall. Dry-stack the body if you like, but bond the top cap course with high-heat masonry adhesive — people sit on it, lean on it, and set drinks on it, and a loose cap stone is the most likely thing to actually injure someone. Finish by adding a few inches of lava rock in the bottom of the bowl to improve drainage and airflow under the fire.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Any river rock, streambed stone, or damp porous stone inside the bowl. The one non-negotiable.
- Building on bare soil with no gravel base. Water collects, the base heaves, and the ring goes out of level in one winter.
- Mortaring the liner tight to the outer wall. Differential expansion cracks it — leave the air gap.
- Sealing the pit completely. Fires need under-draft; a fully sealed bowl smokes badly.
- Placing it under a tree canopy or against a deck. Ten feet of clearance, minimum, in every direction including up.
