Half the dry creek beds out there are decorative ribbons of rock that flood the first time it rains hard. The other half move serious storm water and happen to look great doing it. The difference is that the good ones are drainage swales first and landscaping second. Plan a weekend for a 30–40 foot run: a day of digging and fabric, a day of placing stone. Materials run $400–$900 depending on how much boulder you buy. No special skills required — just honest grading and the discipline to route the water before you decorate the channel.

Step 1: Route the Swale Where Water Already Wants to Go
Watch your yard during a hard rain, or flood it with a hose, and map where water actually flows. Your creek bed should follow that path from the source (downspout, low corner, uphill neighbor) to a legitimate outlet — a lower area, a curb, a rain garden. It needs continuous fall the whole way; 1–2% is plenty, and even a gentle-looking 1% moves a lot of water in a wide channel. Never route it dead straight: gentle S-curves slow the flow, look natural, and give you spots to widen into pools. Lay the hose on the ground to sketch the curves, then paint the outline.
Step 2: Dig a Wide, Shallow Channel
The working shape is wide and shallow, not narrow and deep: 2–4 feet wide and 8–18 inches deep with banks sloped back at roughly 45 degrees or gentler. A rule of thumb that keeps proportions right is width about twice the depth. Mound the excavated soil along the outside bank of each curve — that becomes a berm that keeps overflow inside the run and gives your bank plantings a home. Check fall down the channel with your string line as you dig; a single flat or back-sloped stretch becomes a mosquito pond.
If the creek bed must also drain soggy ground (not just carry surface flow), bury a fabric-wrapped perforated pipe in washed stone beneath the channel first — essentially a French drain with a creek bed on top. That hybrid handles both jobs.
Step 3: Line It with Fabric
Line the excavated channel with non-woven geotextile fabric, running it up both banks and pinning it with staples. The fabric stops moving water from cutting into the soil beneath your stone and stops the stone from sinking into mud. Overlap seams 12 inches with the uphill piece on top, shingle-style, so flow rides over the joint instead of under it. Skip plastic sheeting — it traps water underneath, gets slippery, and shreds. Step 4: Layer the Stone by Size
Stone goes in from big to small, the way a real creek sorts itself:
- Boulders first. Set the 8–18 inch stones along the outside of curves (where flow pushes hardest), at the inlet, and anywhere the grade steepens. Bury each one a third of its height so it looks deposited, not delivered.
- Cobbles second. Bank the 3–6 inch river rock along both edges and around the boulders, two stones deep, covering the fabric on the slopes.
- Channel rock last. Floor the center with 3/4–1.5 inch river rock, 3 inches deep, keeping the middle of the channel the lowest line so small flows stay centered.
This size gradient is not cosmetic: heavy stone armors the high-energy zones, and the smaller bed rock gives normal flows a smooth run. Step 5: Armor the Inlet and Outlet
The two ends take the most abuse. At the inlet, set a flat splash stone or a cluster of cobbles where the downspout or swale enters, so incoming water lands on rock, not soil. At the outlet, widen the channel into a fan of cobbles so the water spreads and slows as it leaves. If the outlet discharges onto lawn, that fan is what prevents a growing bare-dirt scar.
Step 6: Plant the Edges
Plant the banks and berms, not the channel. Sedges, switchgrass, daylilies, and creeping juniper root through the fabric edges and lock the banks together, while softening the rock line so the creek reads as landscape instead of a rock trench. Keep the channel itself clear — plants in the flow path snag leaves and build debris dams. Water everything in, then run a hose at the inlet for ten minutes and walk the run: water should move steadily, pool nowhere, and exit at the fan.
Choosing Plants for the Banks
Not every plant tolerates the swing between soggy-during-a-storm and bone-dry-the-rest-of-the-time that creek bank soil goes through. The right choices root deep enough to hold the bank and shrug off both extremes.

Plant into the soil at the fabric edge, not through the channel fabric itself — dig a small pocket just past where the fabric ends, or cut a small X-slit in the fabric at the planting point and tuck the root ball through it. Avoid anything with an aggressive, shallow root system (running bamboo, most mints) right at the bank edge; it will colonize the channel bed itself and start snagging debris in the flow path.
Maintaining a Dry Creek Bed
A well-built creek bed is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. Plan on a few passes a year to keep it moving water the way it did on day one.
- Clear leaves and debris before they build a dam. Autumn leaf drop and windblown mulch collect fastest at curves and at the inlet, where flow slows down. A build-up there backs water up and pushes it out of the channel during the next storm. A quick rake-through each fall, and after any major storm, keeps the channel clear.
- Re-level stone that heavy flow has displaced. A big storm event can shove channel rock downstream a few feet, exposing fabric in spots and piling stone up elsewhere. Walk the run after any heavy rain and rake displaced rock back into an even bed while it is still obvious where it came from — wait too long and you will be guessing.
- Check that boulders have not shifted at the outside of curves. This is the highest-energy zone in the whole system. A boulder that has rolled or settled out of position needs resetting and re-burying to a third of its height before it stops doing its job of armoring that bend.
- Top up channel rock every few years. Some stone migrates downstream permanently over time, and UV and traffic can grind smaller stone slightly smaller. A half-yard top-up every 3–5 years keeps bed depth where it needs to be.
- Cut back bank plantings before they encroach on the channel. Grasses and groundcovers that spread into the flow path catch debris and start their own miniature dams. An annual cutback in late winter keeps the planting in its zone.
Mistakes That Turn Creek Beds into Ponds
- Decorating instead of draining. If the channel does not fall continuously to a real outlet, it is a rock-lined puddle.
- Narrow and deep. Deep trenches erode their banks and hide the stone. Go wide and shallow.
- One stone size. Uniform rock washes out at curves and looks like a gravel strip, not a creek.
- Plastic under the rock. It sheds water sideways into the banks and shreds within a couple of seasons.
- Boulders perched on the surface. Unburied boulders roll in high flow and read as fake immediately.
Bottom Line
Route first, decorate second. Follow the water’s natural path on continuous 1–2% fall, dig wide and shallow, line with non-woven fabric, layer boulders–cobbles–bed rock from the outside in, armor both ends, and plant the banks.
