Gravel Driveway Maintenance: Potholes, Ruts, Washboarding & Winter

Every gravel driveway loses stone and shape over time — that part is normal. What separates a driveway that stays smooth for twenty years from one that turns into a moonscape by year three is maintenance rhythm. A little regrading and top-up material each year is cheap. Letting potholes and washboarding compound until you need a full rebuild is not, and by the time a driveway looks bad enough to worry about, the base underneath it is usually already compromised, not just the surface stone. Budget an afternoon once or twice a year for routine upkeep, plus a rented box blade or landscape rake for anything beyond light raking, and a few tons of #57 stone on hand for top-ups.

  1. Walk the driveway twice a year. Once in spring after freeze-thaw and once in fall before winter, walk the full length and flag every soft spot, pothole, and low area with a stake or marking paint. Small problems caught early take minutes to fix; the same problems ignored for a season take a wheelbarrow and an afternoon.
  2. Regrade before it looks bad, not after. Drag a box blade or landscape rake over the surface once or twice a year, pulling loose stone from the shoulders and low spots back toward the center and re-cutting the crown. Regrading redistributes the stone you already own instead of buying more, and it is the single highest-value maintenance task on this whole list. On a driveway that sees daily traffic, twice a year (spring and fall) keeps ahead of most problems; a lightly used driveway can often get by on one annual pass.
  3. Repair potholes by digging them out, not by dumping stone in them. Excavate the pothole an inch or two below its visible bottom and 4–6 inches past its edges in every direction, so you are working with firm material all around — dumping loose stone into a hole with mud still at the bottom just creates a softer, bigger hole a month later. Fill the excavated hole with crusher run in 2-inch tamped lifts to within an inch of grade, then cap with #57 stone and blend the edges with a rake so there is no ridge for tires to catch.
  4. Fix ruts before they become channels. Wheel ruts start shallow and get deeper because water collects in them and softens the base underneath. Fill shallow ruts by regrading loose surface stone into them; for ruts deep enough to expose the base layer, treat them like a pothole repair — excavate, compact fresh crusher run, and cap with #57.
  5. Break up washboarding with a full regrade, not just raking the ridges flat. Washboarding (the regular rippled ridges that form under repeated tire braking and acceleration, especially on curves and near stop points) is a compaction problem, not just a surface problem. Scarify the corrugated section with the box blade, reshape it, and compact it again — raking the tops of the ridges off without disturbing what is underneath just lets them re-form within weeks.
  6. Top up the surface course where stone has visibly thinned. Traffic and grading both migrate stone toward the edges over the years. Every year or two, add a thin lift of #57 stone to any section where the base layer is starting to show through, and regrade it in.
  7. Clear and maintain roadside ditches and culverts. A driveway with perfect crown and base will still wash out if the ditch beside it is clogged and water has nowhere to go. Clean debris from ditch lines and culvert ends each fall before the driveway sees heavy rain or snowmelt.
  8. Set the plow blade height above the stone before the first snow. Adjust plow skid shoes or set the blade edge to ride a half-inch to an inch above the driveway surface, confirmed on bare gravel before the first storm. This one adjustment prevents most of the winter stone loss described below.

Pro tip: Install tall, reflective driveway markers along both edges before winter. They let you (or a plow driver) see exactly where the gravel edge is under snow cover, which prevents far more stone loss than any blade adjustment alone.

Plowing Without Scraping the Stone Off

Plowing is the single fastest way to strip years of stone off a gravel driveway in one winter, and it is almost always avoidable with the right setup.

If you hire a plow contractor, tell them explicitly it is a gravel surface and confirm they will run the blade high. Many plow trucks default to a scraping height calibrated for asphalt, and a single aggressive pass on gravel can undo a full top-up. It is worth walking the route with the contractor before the season starts — point out the driveway edges, any culvert crossings, and where the stone tends to thin, so the first storm of the year is not also the first time they see the surface they are plowing.

For driveways you plow yourself, a straight-blade plow set too aggressively is not the only culprit — snowblowers with metal augers set too low do the same damage, throwing stone along with the snow. Set the auger housing height the same way you would a plow blade: a half-inch or more above bare gravel, confirmed before the season’s first use.

Troubleshooting Recurring Problems

Potholes keep coming back in the same spot

A pothole that reopens in the same location almost always means the base under it is compromised, not just the surface stone. Dig deeper than the visible hole — if you hit soft, wet material below the crusher run, the water is coming from somewhere (a low spot holding rain, a failed culvert, groundwater). Fix the water source or improve drainage there, or the same repair will fail again next season.

Washboarding returns within a month of regrading

If corrugation reappears fast, the underlying base is likely under-compacted or the surface stone is too rounded to interlock. Confirm the surface course is angular crushed stone, not rounded pea gravel or river rock, and compact the regraded section with a plate compactor rather than leaving it loose after the box blade pass.

The whole driveway feels soft and spongy

Widespread softness usually points to an undersized or saturated base rather than a surface problem. Check drainage first — ditches, culverts, and crown — before adding more surface stone, since piling #57 on top of a saturated base only masks the problem temporarily.

Stone keeps disappearing every winter

This is almost always plow blade height. Before assuming you need to buy more stone every spring, confirm the blade or skid shoe setting against bare gravel and walk the edges for windrowed stone that just needs raking back onto the driveway rather than replacing.

Water is pooling in the same spot every time it rains

Standing water almost always means the crown has flattened out in that section, either from years of traffic or from repeated regrading that gradually pulled stone away from the centerline. Re-cut the crown locally with the box blade, aiming for the same 2–4% cross slope used in the original build, and confirm the section drains before considering the fix complete.
