Most gravel buyers never actually choose between limestone and granite — they take whatever the nearest quarry produces, because hauling rock more than 30 miles costs more than the rock itself. But when both are available, the price gap is real and so is the performance gap, and knowing which direction it runs will save you money on some jobs and save you a rebuild on others.
These are not different sizes or gradations — you can buy #57, #67 or crusher run in either rock. The difference is geological. Limestone is a soft sedimentary rock made largely of calcium carbonate. Granite is a hard igneous rock crystallized from magma. Everything that follows comes from that one fact.
Buy limestone for compacted bases, driveways and any job where a tight, self-binding surface matters and the price gap is meaningful. Pay up for granite when the stone stays visible, sits in standing water or acidic soil, faces hard freeze-thaw cycles, or has to survive heavy traffic without breaking down into dust.
Hardness and Wear
Granite sits around 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale; limestone lands at 3 to 4. In practical terms that means granite resists abrasion roughly an order of magnitude better. Under repeated truck traffic, plow blades or turning tires, limestone particles grind against each other and progressively break down into fines. Granite chips and fractures far more slowly.
Whether that matters depends entirely on the application. In a compacted base under pavers or a slab, the material is confined and protected — limestone will last decades and its tendency to produce fines is actually helpful, because those fines are what make crusher run bind into a hard, load-bearing mat. On an exposed driving surface, though, limestone’s breakdown is the mechanism that turns a clean driveway into a dusty, rutted one. That is where granite earns its premium.
Freeze-Thaw and Water Exposure
Limestone is more porous than granite. Water gets into the pore structure, freezes, expands and spalls the stone from the inside. Over enough winters, limestone in a wet, exposed position visibly deteriorates — rounded edges, flaking surfaces, more fines in the mix each year. Granite’s tight crystalline structure absorbs very little water and shrugs off the same cycles.
The other water issue is chemical. Calcium carbonate dissolves slowly in acidic water, and rain in much of the eastern United States is mildly acidic. It is a slow process, not something you will watch happen, but limestone used in a constantly wet setting — a French drain, a dry well, a creek-adjacent riprap bank — will lose mass over decades in a way granite will not. Dust, Color and Soil pH
Limestone’s soft, chalky fines produce the pale dust that coats cars, shoes and shrubs along a limestone driveway in dry weather. It also tracks indoors as a light residue. Granite produces far less dust, and what it does produce is darker and less visible. If your driveway runs past a house with light siding or a much-used entry door, this is not a trivial consideration.
Color runs the other way for some buyers. Limestone’s warm whites, buffs and light grays look clean and bright, and light-colored gravel reflects heat rather than absorbing it. Granite’s grays, pinks and salt-and-pepper tones read as more contemporary and hide staining better, which matters on a driveway where oil drips are inevitable.
The pH effect is the sleeper issue. Limestone is agricultural lime in rock form — that is literally what garden lime is. A limestone bed or driveway edge will slowly sweeten the surrounding soil, raising pH in a band a foot or two out. If you are growing blueberries, azaleas, rhododendrons, hollies or hydrangeas you want blue, use granite there. If your soil is already acidic and you are growing lawn or vegetables, the limestone effect is mildly beneficial and free.
Price and Regional Reality
Both materials sit in the $25–45 per ton range at the quarry, with granite typically 10–30% higher where both are genuinely local. But that spread is dwarfed by trucking. Freight commonly runs $5–15 per ton-mile-equivalent on short hauls and can double your delivered cost over 40 miles. A quarry-local limestone at $28 a ton beats a granite trucked 60 miles at $38 plus freight, every time, on any job where limestone is technically adequate.
Practically, that means the Midwest, Texas, Florida and the Great Lakes region run on limestone, while New England, the Southeast Piedmont, the Rockies and much of the West run on granite and trap rock. The Other Rocks You Will Be Offered
Limestone and granite dominate the conversation, but yards sell several other crushed rocks and it helps to know where they land on the same scale.
- Trap rock (basalt, diabase). Igneous, dark gray to near-black, harder than most granite and extremely tough. Common in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Treat it as granite-equivalent or better.
- Dolomite. A magnesium-rich cousin of limestone, noticeably harder and more durable, with the same pale color and the same tendency to raise soil pH. If your yard stocks it, it is usually the better sedimentary option.
- Quartzite. Metamorphosed sandstone, very hard, often pink or white. Excellent durability, limited availability, priced accordingly.
- River gravel. Naturally rounded rather than crushed, of mixed geology. Durable but it will not interlock, so it belongs in decorative and drainage roles rather than compacted bases.

Which Should You Choose?
Choose limestone for compacted driveway and patio bases, where its self-binding fines are an asset; for buried structural layers protected from weather; for shed pads and gravel parking areas in dry or moderate climates; and any time it is the local rock and the job does not fall into the categories below.
