How to Build a Level Gravel Shed Base

A shed sitting on an unlevel or uncompacted pad will rack its own frame, jam the door, and eventually rot the floor from trapped moisture. A gravel base solves both problems at once: it lifts the shed off wet ground and gives you a hard, level surface to build on. For a typical 10 x 12 ft shed, plan on a half-day of layout and excavation, a rented plate compactor, and roughly $150–$350 in crusher run depending on local pricing and how far you extend past the footprint.

How Much Base Depth Do You Need?

Four inches of compacted crusher run is the standard depth for a typical resin, wood, or metal storage shed on reasonably firm ground. Push that to 6 inches if any of the following apply: the shed will hold heavy contents like a riding mower, workshop tools, or stacked firewood; the soil is soft clay or stays damp after rain; or the shed is large enough that its footprint concentrates real weight over a small area. It is far cheaper to add 2 extra inches of crusher run now than to jack up a settled shed and rebuild the pad underneath it later.

Frame vs. Free-Laid: Which Edge Do You Want?

A framed base uses treated lumber or timbers pinned around the perimeter to hold the crusher run in a crisp, contained block. It looks tidier, resists edge erosion, and is the better choice if the shed will sit directly on skids or a timber frame. A free-laid base skips the frame and instead slopes the gravel edges down at roughly a 1:1 angle past the footprint. It is faster to build and has no wood to eventually rot, but it needs more material and a slightly larger footprint to accommodate the side slopes. Neither is wrong — pick framed if you want a clean, exact edge, and free-laid if you want the simpler build.

  1. Lay out the footprint and extend it 12 inches past the shed on every side. Stake the actual shed dimensions first, then stake a second, larger rectangle 12 inches out from each edge. That overage keeps the compacted base under the drip line and under any overhang, so the edge of the pad never washes out from roof runoff.
  2. Excavate 4–6 inches of topsoil and organic material. Remove sod and topsoil down to firm subsoil across the full staked area, not just under the shed itself. Gravel placed on top of organic soil will sink unevenly no matter how well you compact it — and grass or roots left in place will keep decomposing under the pad for years, leaving voids as they break down.
  3. Set the frame, if you are using one. Pin treated 4x4s or timbers around the outer stakes with rebar driven through pre-drilled holes. Check that the top of the frame is level all the way around before you backfill — this becomes your reference plane for every step after.
  4. Roll out geotextile fabric over the excavated area. Overlap seams by at least 12 inches. On sandy or gravelly native soil you can skip this step; on clay or anywhere the ground stays damp, skip it and you will eventually get soil pumping up through the base.
  5. Spread and compact crusher run in 2-inch lifts. Dump, rake level, and run the plate compactor over each lift before adding the next. A 4-inch base is two lifts; do not dump the full depth and compact once, or the bottom half stays loose and the pad settles unevenly under the shed’s weight.
  6. Check level in both directions as you go, not just at the end. Set the 4-ft level across the pad lengthwise, widthwise, and diagonally corner-to-corner after each lift. Catching a low corner while there is still crusher run in the pile is a five-minute fix; catching it after the shed is built is not.
  7. Screed the final surface flat and give it a last compaction pass. Drag a straight board across the top of the frame (or across string lines on a free-laid pad) to strike off high spots, then run the compactor once more. The finished surface should be dead level, not crowned — a shed base is not a driveway.

Pro tip: Check level corner-to-corner diagonally, not just side-to-side. A pad can read level on both axes and still be twisted, which is exactly what racks a shed frame and jams the door.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Building the pad exactly to the shed’s footprint. Without the 12-inch overhang, roof drip erodes a trench right along the base edge within a season.
  • Skipping compaction between lifts. An uncompacted base looks fine on delivery day and settles unevenly once the shed and its contents load it.
  • Ignoring diagonal level checks. A twisted pad is easy to miss with a level laid flat in only two directions.
  • Setting the pad flush with surrounding grade. Keep the finished base at least an inch or two above adjacent soil so water sheds away from the shed instead of pooling against it.
  • Undersizing the depth for what the shed will hold. A 4-inch base is fine for garden tools and a mower; it is not enough under a shed doubling as a workshop with heavy equipment. Match depth to load, not just to shed size.
