Gravel vs Asphalt Driveway: Cost, Lifespan & Upkeep

Asphalt looks like the grown-up choice and gravel looks like the cheap one, and that framing is roughly half right. Asphalt gives you a sealed, smooth, snowplough-friendly surface for $3 to $7 per square foot installed. Gravel gives you a permeable, endlessly repairable surface for $1 to $3 per square foot, and that lower figure is DIY-inclusive — the material is the bulk of the cost, not the labour.

What the sticker price hides is that neither surface is finished when it is installed. Asphalt needs sealcoating every three to five years and a resurfacing layer somewhere around year 18. Gravel needs a top-up load every two to three years and a drag or grade once a season. Run both over twenty years on the same 600 square foot driveway and the gap narrows — but it does not close.

Gravel wins on install cost, 20-year total, drainage and repairability — the right call for long, rural, sloping or heavily loaded driveways. Asphalt wins on snow clearing, dust, wheelchairs and strollers, and suburban curb appeal. Short driveway on a paved street: asphalt. Anything over about 100 feet: gravel, comfortably.

Install Cost, Head to Head

The two surfaces share a base. Asphalt is not poured onto soil any more than gravel is dumped onto it — both want a compacted dense-graded base, typically 4 inches on decent ground and 6 to 8 inches over clay or soft fill with woven geotextile underneath. The difference is what goes on top: 2 inches of #57 stone for gravel, or 2 to 3 inches of hot-mix asphalt laid by a paving crew with a roller.

That shared base is where cheap asphalt jobs go wrong. A paving contractor quoting noticeably under the going rate is usually saving money below the surface rather than on the mix — thinner base, no fabric, no compaction in lifts. You will not see it on handover day, and you will see it in year four as alligator cracking. Ask any asphalt bid to state base depth in inches and whether it is compacted in 2-inch lifts; the answer tells you more about the price than the mix specification does.

That last row is the real cost driver. The 20-Year Total

Here is the same 12 by 50 foot driveway run out over two decades. Gravel costs are dominated by top-up loads: roughly 1.5 inches of fresh #57 across 600 square feet is about 2.8 cubic yards, near 4 tons at $25 to $45 per ton, plus a $50 to $150 delivery. Asphalt costs are dominated by sealcoating and the eventual overlay.

Two honest caveats. If you pay a contractor to grade and top up your gravel every couple of years rather than doing it yourself, add $200 to $400 per visit and the totals converge. And if you skip asphalt sealcoating entirely — which plenty of people do — you save the $700 but pull the overlay forward by five years or more, which is a worse trade. Climate: Where Each One Fails

Neither material is climate-neutral, and the failure modes are opposites. Asphalt is a flexible pavement: it is a continuous sheet, so anything the ground does underneath shows up as a crack on top. Gravel is a loose aggregate: the ground can move all it likes and the surface simply reshuffles.

Freeze-Thaw Country

Frost heave is the enemy of asphalt. Water gets into a hairline crack, freezes, widens it, and the next thaw lets more water in. Within a few cycles you have alligator cracking and, eventually, potholes that need cutting out and patching. Gravel is immune to this in any meaningful sense — a frost-heaved gravel drive settles back and gets raked flat. What gravel does badly in winter is snow clearing: a plough blade set too low peels stone into the snowbank, and you lose material every year unless you fit skid shoes or plough on a frozen crust.

Heat, Sun and Heavy Rain

In hot climates the binder in asphalt softens; kickstands, trailer jacks and hot tyres leave dents, and UV slowly oxidises the surface grey and brittle. Gravel does not care about heat, though it does throw dust in dry weather — a real nuisance if the drive runs past a window. Heavy rain flips the comparison the other way again: asphalt sheds every drop as runoff to somewhere else on your property, while an open-graded gravel surface with 36 to 42 percent voids lets water pass straight through. Repairability

This is gravel’s strongest suit and it rarely appears in comparisons. A pothole in a gravel driveway is fixed with a shovel of crusher run, ten minutes and a tamp — you can do it in your work clothes before leaving the house. The repair is invisible because the whole surface is the same loose material. A pothole in asphalt requires cutting out a square, priming the edges, filling with hot or cold mix and compacting it, and it will always show as a dark patch with a seam that becomes the next crack.

  1. Gravel rut or pothole. Rake the loose surface stone aside, fill the void with dense-graded crusher run, compact it, rake the #57 back over the top. Cost: a few dollars of stone.
  2. Gravel spreading at the edges. Install edging or a shallow shoulder trench once, and stop paying for migration forever.
  3. Gravel wash-out on a slope. Deepen the crown to the full 4 percent and add cross-drains; use angular stone, never rounded pea gravel, on any grade.
  4. Asphalt hairline crack. Clean and fill within the same season with rubberised crack filler. Left open, it becomes a pothole in two winters.
  5. Asphalt alligator cracking. That is a base failure, not a surface one. Patching it is cosmetic; the section needs cutting out and rebuilding.

The compounding effect matters more than any single repair. Gravel maintenance is small, frequent, cheap and forgiving of delay. Asphalt maintenance is occasional, moderate and punishing of delay — every year you postpone sealing or crack-filling pulls the resurfacing date closer.

Resale, Kerb Appeal and Permits

There is also a maintenance-personality question buried in this. Gravel rewards someone who does not mind dragging a rake or a box blade over the surface twice a year and topping up a load when the crown flattens. Asphalt rewards someone who would rather ignore a driveway for four years and then write one cheque. Neither is wrong, but choosing the surface that fights your temperament is how driveways end up neglected, and a neglected asphalt drive fails far more expensively than a neglected gravel one.

Be realistic about context. In a suburban street where every neighbour has a paved drive, a gravel one reads as unfinished and will be noticed by buyers and possibly by a homeowners association. In a rural or semi-rural setting, a well-built gravel drive with clean edges reads as entirely appropriate and nobody blinks. Asphalt’s resale advantage is real but local, and it is largely a matter of matching the street.

Two practical points that decide the question for some households. First, accessibility: strollers, wheelchairs, walkers and bicycles all struggle on loose stone, and no amount of good gravel technique fixes that. Second, stormwater rules. A growing number of municipalities charge for impervious surface area or restrict how much of a lot can be sealed, and a permeable gravel drive can keep you under the threshold where asphalt would not.

Which One Fits Your Property

  • 150 ft rural drive, farm equipment, no HOA. Gravel, without hesitation. Asphalt at that length is a five-figure job that trucks will chew up anyway.
  • 30 ft suburban drive, two cars, paved street. Asphalt. The cost gap is small at that size and the surface matches the neighbourhood.
  • Steep slope in snow country. Asphalt for traction and ploughing, but only if the base is right; otherwise gravel with angular stone and a proper crown.
  • Wet lot with standing water. Gravel. Permeability is the feature you are buying.
  • Someone in the house uses a wheelchair or walker. Asphalt, or concrete, and stop the comparison there.
  • Tight budget, willing to work. Gravel done properly beats asphalt done cheaply every single time.

Bottom Line

Gravel costs roughly half as much over twenty years, drains rather than sheds, and can be repaired by anyone with a shovel — but it demands attention two or three times a year and it will never be smooth. Asphalt buys you a finished surface that ploughs, rolls and photographs well, at two to three times the lifetime cost and with a hard expiry date on it.
