Mulch vs Rock: Which Ground Cover Actually Wins?

Every spring, homeowners stand in the same aisle having the same argument. Rock lasts forever but bakes the beds. Mulch looks better and feeds the soil but vanishes by August and has to be bought again. Landscapers push whichever one has the better margin that season, and the internet is full of people insisting their choice is obviously correct.

The truth is that mulch and rock are not competing products. They solve different problems. One is a soil amendment that happens to look tidy; the other is a permanent surface that happens to sit in a garden bed. Choosing correctly is mostly a matter of being honest about whether the bed contains plants you actually care about, and how much weekend labor you are willing to spend on it for the next decade.

The Ten-Year Cost, Calculated Honestly

Rock wins the long game on paper, and it is not close. But the margin is smaller than rock salesmen claim, because rock has hidden re-investment costs that mulch does not: edging to contain it, fabric underneath, and a top-up every five to eight years as stones sink into the soil and disappear.

Take a realistic bed: 400 square feet at 3 inches deep. That is roughly 3.7 cubic yards of material. In mulch that is about $150–220 delivered, repeated every year (or every other year if you are only top-dressing). In river rock at 1.5 tons per cubic yard, you are buying around 5.5 tons — call it $400–700 delivered, plus fabric and edging, once.

Plant Health: The Factor Most People Ignore

This is where the two materials genuinely diverge, and where most bad landscaping decisions get made. Organic mulch decomposes. That is not a defect — it is the entire point. As shredded bark, wood chips or leaf mulch break down, they add organic matter to the top few inches of soil, feed soil biology, improve structure and help clay hold air and sand hold water. A bed mulched for five years has visibly better soil than one that was not.

Rock does none of that. Worse, it actively works against soil quality. Stone has enormous thermal mass and near-zero insulation value. In full sun, a rock bed can push root-zone soil temperatures 15–25°F above an adjacent mulched bed, and it holds that heat into the evening. Shallow-rooted perennials, hydrangeas, azaleas and anything with a preference for cool feet will sulk, scorch at the leaf margins and need far more irrigation.

Where Rock Helps Plants

There is a real exception. Xeric and Mediterranean plants — lavender, agave, yucca, sedum, ornamental grasses, rosemary, most succulents — evolved on gravelly, fast-draining ground and genuinely prefer stone. Rock keeps crowns dry, prevents the rot that mulch encourages, and the reflected heat is a feature. A gravel garden planted correctly is one of the lowest-maintenance landscapes you can build.

Where Rock Hurts Plants

Rock around foundation shrubs on a south or west exposure is the classic mistake, especially when the stone is light-colored marble chip or white granite that reflects heat straight back onto the foliage. Add a black plastic sheet underneath — still depressingly common — and you have built a shallow oven with no water infiltration and no gas exchange. Weed Control: Both Sides Are Lying to You

The rock camp says stone stops weeds permanently. The mulch camp says mulch smothers them. Neither is true for long, because almost all weeds in an established bed arrive from above, not below. Seeds blow in, land on the surface, and germinate in whatever organic debris has collected there.

Fresh mulch at 3 inches is an excellent weed blocker for one season because it physically blocks light. By month ten it has thinned and partly composted, and it is now a seed bed. You reset it with the annual top-dress, which is why mulched beds look clean every spring.

Rock is genuinely better in year one and year two. Then dust, leaf litter and grass clippings sift into the void spaces between the stones, build a thin organic layer, and weeds root in it — only now their roots are threaded through fabric and jammed between stones, so pulling them is miserable and you tear the fabric doing it. Anyone who has weeded a five-year-old rock bed in July knows the difference between “low maintenance” and “no maintenance.”

Fabric helps rock and hurts mulch. Under stone, a good woven geotextile keeps the rock from sinking into the subsoil, which is its real job. Maintenance Labor Over a Decade

Mulch has a predictable annual chore: order, haul, spread, done in a weekend. Rock has almost no annual chore but two brutal ones — installation, and eventual removal or refresh. Nobody talks about removal until they want to change the bed, at which point you discover that shoveling five tons of embedded stone out of a planting bed is one of the least pleasant jobs in residential landscaping.

Slopes, Drainage and Wind

Rock wins outright anywhere water moves. A hard rain floats fine-shredded mulch downhill and deposits it in the lawn, the driveway or the storm drain. Stone at 3/4 inch and larger stays put, which is exactly why rock is the standard for swales, downspout splash zones, dry creek beds and the strip along a foundation. On genuinely steep ground, larger angular stone or small riprap is the correct answer, not landscape gravel.

Wind matters too. In open, exposed sites, lightweight mulches — and especially lava rock, at only about 0.65 tons per cubic yard — migrate. Heavier river rock at 1.5 tons per cubic yard simply does not move. Which Should You Choose? Four Real Scenarios

A mixed perennial border you actively garden in. Mulch, every time. You will be digging, dividing and replanting in that bed, and rock makes every one of those jobs harder. The annual cost is the price of good soil.

A 3-foot foundation strip with nothing planted in it. Rock. It never needs touching, it keeps splash-back off the siding, and it drains water away from the house. Use 3/4-inch to 1.5-inch washed stone and skip the plastic.

Around newly planted trees and shrubs. Mulch, in a wide ring, pulled back a few inches from the trunk. Young root systems need cool, moist, biologically active soil in the top 6 inches, and rock gives them the opposite.

A hot, dry side yard nobody looks at. Rock, decisively. Low visibility, low plant value, high nuisance factor — this is exactly the zone where paying once and walking away for fifteen years is worth every dollar.

Rock is cheaper over ten years and nearly maintenance-free for the first five. Mulch costs more in cash and weekends but is the only one of the two that makes your soil better, and in a bed full of plants that is not a small advantage.
