How to Prepare a Paver Base (and the Mistakes That Sink Patios)

Every wavy, sunken, weed-cracked paver patio you have ever walked on failed underground. The pavers are just the messenger. Base preparation is 80% of the labor and 100% of the longevity: plan on a hard weekend for a 12 x 12 ft patio, a rented plate compactor (about $90/day), and $150–$350 in base material and sand. The recipe is fixed: 4 inches of compacted base under foot traffic (6–8 inches under driveways or over soft clay), topped with exactly 1 inch of screeded concrete sand. Not 2 inches of sand. One.

Tools & Materials

  • Plate compactor, shovels, landscape rake, wheelbarrow
  • Stakes, mason line, line level, 4-ft level, tape measure
  • Two 10-ft lengths of 1-inch outside-diameter pipe or electrical conduit (screed rails)
  • A straight 2×4 longer than the rail spacing (screed board)
  • Crusher run or dense-graded paver base; concrete sand (not play sand, not stone dust)
  • Woven geotextile fabric if you are on clay

Step 1: Do the Excavation Math

Work from the top down. Finished patio surface sits at grade. Below that: paver thickness (commonly 2 3/8 in) + 1 inch of sand + 4 inches of compacted base. That is roughly 7 3/8 inches of excavation for a standard patio — call it 7.5 and dig to a consistent depth, measured down from a string line set at finished grade, not from the dirt, which lies. Extend the excavation 6 inches beyond the finished patio edge on every side; your edge restraint needs compacted base under it, not lawn.

Slope the whole excavation away from the house at 1/4 inch per foot (about 2%) so the finished patio sheds water. Build the slope into the subgrade now — you cannot fix it later with sand.

Step 2: Compact the Subgrade (and Fabric on Clay)

Strip all topsoil and organics from the excavation — base on topsoil settles, period. Run the plate compactor over the bare subgrade in two directions. On clay or wet-prone ground, roll out woven geotextile fabric before any stone goes down; it stops the base from slowly disappearing into the soil below.

Step 3: Build the Base in 2-Inch Lifts

Spread crusher run in 2-inch lifts, lightly dampen, and compact each lift with at least four passes in perpendicular directions before adding the next. A 4-inch base is two lifts; never one. The compactor only densifies the top of what it rides on, and uncompacted material at the bottom of a thick lift becomes next year’s dip. Check your 2% slope with the level as each lift goes in. Done right, the finished base is hard enough to walk on without leaving footprints — if you can kick a divot in it, keep compacting. Quantities: one cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch deep. A 12 x 12 ft patio (144 sq ft) at 4 compacted inches is about 1.8 yd³ — order 2.2–2.5 yd³ to cover compaction loss, or let the paver base calculator and crusher run calculator do the arithmetic with waste built in. At 1.5 tons per cubic yard, that is roughly 3.5 tons on the driveway.

Step 4: Screed Exactly 1 Inch of Concrete Sand

Lay your two pipes on the compacted base, parallel, a screed-board’s length apart. Spread concrete sand over and between them, then pull the 2×4 along the pipes like rails, striking the sand off flat at exactly the pipe height — 1 inch. Lift the pipes, fill their grooves with sand, and pat flat with a trowel. Do not walk on screeded sand, and do not compact it; the pavers get compacted into it later, which is what locks them in place.

Why exactly 1 inch, and why concrete sand? Coarse, angular concrete sand at 1 inch consolidates just enough to seat each paver and then stops moving. Thicker sand beds stay compressible — every extra inch of sand is future settlement, and wheel or foot loads will map ruts and dips straight through the pavers. Fine play sand and stone dust both hold water and migrate; stone dust is the right bedding for flagstone laid on stone dust, but for concrete pavers the spec is concrete sand. Step 5: Edge Restraint

Pavers without restrained edges creep outward until the field unzips. Spike paver edging into the compacted base (that extra 6 inches of base you excavated for) around the entire perimeter, or pour a concrete toe. This goes in either before laying or immediately after, but it is part of the base system, not an accessory.

Base Depth by Climate and Frost Line

The 4-inch base spec in this guide is a foot-traffic patio standard for most of the country, but frost depth changes the math in colder climates. Water trapped in the base freezes, expands, and heaves the surface above it — that is frost heave, and it is the reason cold-climate specs run deeper than warm-climate ones even for an identical patio.

You are very rarely digging a patio base all the way to the actual frost line — that is a footing requirement for structures, not a patio spec. What actually matters in cold climates is drainage: a base that lets water pass through and away rather than pooling and freezing inside it does far more for frost resistance than raw depth alone. That is why cold-climate installers often lean toward a more open-graded base material even though it costs a bit more compaction effort than standard dense-graded crusher run.

Three Ways Patios Actually Fail (and How to Fix Them)

  • The corner near a downspout sinks first. This is a drainage concentration problem, not a compaction problem — a downspout dumping directly onto or near the patio edge saturates that one corner of the base every time it rains, and saturated base compacts further under load even after the rest of the patio has stabilized. Fix: extend the downspout with buried solid pipe to daylight well past the patio edge, then lift the affected pavers, re-compact the softened base (adding fresh material if it has washed away), and reset.
  • The whole field tilts slightly toward the house over a year or two. This traces back to Step 1 — the excavation slope was cut wrong, or was never actually checked with a level and just eyeballed. Sand cannot fix a base that slopes the wrong way; it will just re-settle to match the base underneath it within a season. Fix: this one requires pulling the pavers and sand in the affected area, re-shaping the base to the correct 2% fall away from the house, and rebuilding the sand bed and pavers on top of the corrected slope.
  • A track of pavers along one edge sinks under repeated foot traffic (a common path from a door to a gate). High-traffic lines compact the sand bed unevenly over time, especially where the edge restraint was skipped or installed loosely. Fix: check the edge restraint first — if it is loose or missing, that is the root cause and must be fixed before resetting anything. Then lift the affected pavers, add a thin, even layer of fresh concrete sand (not a thick patch, which just creates a new soft spot), screed level, and reset with tight joints.

The Mistakes That Sink Patios

  • Sand too thick. The classic. 2–3 inches of sand feels generous and guarantees ruts. One inch, screeded.
  • Base compacted in one thick lift. The bottom stays loose and consolidates under the finished patio.
  • Base stops at the patio edge. Edge pavers tip outward with nothing compacted beneath the restraint.
  • Wrong sand. Play sand, mason sand, or stone dust under pavers holds water, pumps, and shifts.
  • No slope. Water ponds against the house, and freeze-thaw heaves the field.
  • Screeding with a rake and eyeball. Rails and a straightedge or it is not flat, no matter how good your eye is.

Bottom Line

Dig to the math (paver + 1 inch sand + 4 inches base), compact the subgrade, build the base in 2-inch compacted lifts with a 2% slope, screed exactly 1 inch of concrete sand on rails, and restrain the edges into compacted base. That is the whole secret. The patio you lay on top of that base will still be flat when the pavers themselves start showing their age.
