Fire Pit Stone Safety: What Not to Use

A backyard fire pit is one of the few landscape projects where getting the material wrong is not a cosmetic problem. Pick the wrong stone for the inside of the bowl and you are building something that can crack, spall or throw a fragment while four people are sitting three feet away from it.

The mechanism is simple and it has nothing to do with the stone being flammable. Rock that holds water in its pores heats unevenly when a fire is lit against it. The trapped moisture turns to steam, steam expands violently, and the pressure has nowhere to go. Sometimes the stone just cracks. Sometimes a face spalls off. Occasionally a fragment leaves at speed.

Buying tip: Never put river rock inside a fire pit. Rounded river stone is smooth because it has spent a long time in water, and it is exactly the material most likely to hold moisture. Keep it outside the ring as decorative surround only.

The Stones to Keep Out of the Fire

The rule is easy to remember: if a stone came out of water, holds water, or is layered, it does not go inside the fire bowl. That single test rules out most of the dangerous options.

  • River rock and any water-worn cobble. The worst offender. Smooth, rounded, and saturated from the environment it formed in.
  • Sandstone and limestone. Porous and soft. Sandstone spalls in flakes; limestone can crack and, at sustained high heat, calcines into a crumbling, dusty mess.
  • Shale and slate. Layered stone splits along its planes when heat drives moisture between the layers.
  • Pea gravel and small rounded stone. Never as the burn surface. Small wet stones are the classic cause of a loud pop and a flying chip.
  • Concrete pavers and standard blocks. Not rated for direct fire. Moisture in the concrete expands, the surface spalls, and repeated cycles break them down.
  • Anything you found in a creek, a wet field or under snow. Provenance matters more than the rock type here.

Two clarifications, because this advice gets exaggerated online. First, dry stone rarely explodes dramatically; the far more common outcome is cracking and spalling. But a chip leaving a hot ring at head height is a real injury risk and there is no reason to accept it. Second, this applies to the inside of the bowl. Decorative river rock spread around the outside of a pit, well clear of the flame, is completely fine and looks good.

What to Use Instead

Safe fire pit materials are dense, dry, and either fired at high temperature already or naturally heat-stable. The interior of the ring — the surface that actually sees flame — should always be one of these, even if the visible exterior is something prettier.

The standard build is a masonry or block exterior with a fire brick liner or a steel ring inside it. The liner takes the thermal punishment, keeps the outer stones below their failure temperature, and can be replaced in an afternoon when it eventually wears. If you are set on using natural stone you already have on the property, there is a rough field test. Dense stone rings when you tap it and feels heavy for its size. Porous stone sounds dull and, if you drop a little water on a dry piece, drinks it in within seconds instead of beading. That is not laboratory-grade, but a stone that soaks up water on your driveway will soak it up in your yard too.

Gas fire pits change the calculation less than people assume. The flame temperature is lower and steadier than a wood fire, but the same porous stones still fail over repeated cycles, and gas units come with their own requirement: an air gap and a burner pan sized to the manufacturer’s spec. Follow the unit’s instructions over any general stone advice.

The Gravel Base and Drainage

Every fire pit needs a drainage layer at the bottom, and this is where material choice matters again. Use 4 to 6 inches of angular crushed stone or lava rock, never pea gravel or rounded river stone. Angular stone drains just as freely, holds far less moisture in its structure, and does not sit in the hot zone with water trapped inside it.

The drainage layer matters for a reason beyond safety: a pit that holds water rots out the fire ring, leaves you with a bowl of wet ash that will not light, and in freezing climates heaves the whole structure as ice expands underneath. Never build the pit on a wooden deck, over a septic field, or on a lawn you want to keep — the heat sterilises soil to several inches deep. A gravel or paver pad under and around the pit is standard, and a gravel patio makes an ideal fire pit surround because it is completely non-combustible.

Clearances and Siting

  1. 10 feet from any structure. House, fence, shed, garage, deck, propane tank. Many municipalities require 15 or 25 feet — check your local code, which overrides any general guidance.
  2. 25 feet of clear sky above. No overhanging branches, eaves, awnings, pergolas or power lines.
  3. A non-combustible pad extending 2 feet past the ring. Gravel, pavers or stone, so a rolling ember lands on nothing that burns.
  4. Downwind of seating, upwind of nothing. Site it so the prevailing wind carries smoke away from the house and neighbouring windows.
  5. Water within reach. A connected hose or a full bucket, every single time, not just on dry nights.

Keep the inside diameter between 36 and 44 inches. Smaller and it is hard to build a decent fire; larger and the flame gets big enough to be genuinely difficult to control, and the radiant heat pushes seating so far back that the pit stops feeling social.

Bottom Line

Keep river rock, sandstone, limestone, shale and pea gravel out of the fire bowl. Line the interior with fire brick or a steel ring, use granite or lava rock if you want natural stone in contact with flame, and put decorative stone on the outside where it belongs. Drain the base with 4 to 6 inches of angular crushed stone.

Fire brick costs a few dollars a piece and a steel insert is under $200. Against the cost of the rest of the project — and against the possibility of a stone letting go while people are sitting around it — that is not a place to economise. Build the liner first and choose the pretty stone second.
