A single-car driveway should be 10 to 12 feet wide. A two-car driveway should be 20 to 24 feet. Add 3 to 4 feet on any curve, because a car tracks tighter through a bend at the rear wheels than it does at the front and will otherwise cut the inside corner into your lawn every single time.
Those numbers come from vehicle dimensions, not from taste. A mid-size sedan is about 6 feet wide across the body and closer to 7 with mirrors out; a full-size pickup or SUV is 6.5 to 7 feet of body and can push 8 with mirrors. Ten feet gives you a foot and a half of margin on each side, which is the minimum for driving at night in the rain without holding your breath.
The reason width deserves a decision rather than a guess is that it is a multiplier on everything else. Length is fixed by where your house sits. Depth is fixed by engineering. Width is the one dimension you choose freely, and every foot of it runs the entire length of the drive and gets multiplied by six inches of stone.
Buying tip: Stake the proposed edges with string and park your actual vehicles inside it before ordering anything. Ten minutes with a tape and two stakes has saved more driveways than any rule of thumb, especially where the drive passes a wall, a tree or a raised bed.
Width by Vehicle and Use
Pick from the table by what actually uses the drive, then check the exceptions underneath. Note that a “two-car” driveway is not simply double a single — two vehicles side by side need door-opening room between them, which is why 20 feet is the floor and 24 is comfortable.

Two situations pull you toward the wider end regardless of vehicle count. If the drive is bordered by a retaining wall, fence or hedge, add a foot — drivers unconsciously steer away from vertical obstacles and will wear a rut on the open side. And if it is a long rural drive that a fire truck or oil delivery might need, 12 feet is a practical minimum and many local codes say so explicitly.
Curves, Turning Radius and Aprons
Width failures almost always happen at corners, not on the straight. When a car turns, the rear wheels follow a tighter arc than the front — the effect is called off-tracking, and it is why the inside edge of every under-built curve is bare dirt. A passenger car needs roughly a 15-foot inside radius to turn comfortably; anything tighter and you widen the pavement to compensate.
- Keep the inside radius at 15 ft or more. Below that, add width rather than forcing the geometry.
- Widen through the whole bend, not just the apex. Start the flare a car length before the curve and taper out a car length after it.
- Flare the street entrance. The apron where the drive meets the road should widen 2 to 4 ft on each side so you can swing in without dropping a wheel off the edge.
- Size turnarounds properly. A hammerhead needs a 10 by 20 ft stub; a full circle needs about 30 ft of inside diameter.
- Add a parking apron beside the garage. A standard stall is 9 to 10 ft wide by 20 ft deep — the cheapest way to add parking without widening the whole run.
The apron trick is worth dwelling on. Widening a 100-foot driveway by 10 feet to gain a parking space costs you 1,000 square feet of stone. Adding a 10 by 20 apron at the top gains the same usable space for 200 square feet. Same parking, one fifth of the material.
What Each Extra Foot Costs
Run the numbers on a 100-foot drive built to the standard profile — 4 inches of compacted crusher run base plus 2 inches of #57 surface, so 6 inches total. At 6 inches deep, one cubic yard covers 54 square feet.
- 10 ft wide: 1,000 sq ft ÷ 54 = 18.5 yd³, about 28 tons.
- 12 ft wide: 1,200 sq ft = 22.2 yd³, about 34 tons.
- 14 ft wide: 1,400 sq ft = 25.9 yd³, about 40 tons.
- 20 ft wide: 2,000 sq ft = 37 yd³, about 57 tons.
Each additional foot of width on that drive is roughly 1.85 cubic yards, near 3 tons, or $75 to $135 in material at $25 to $45 per ton before delivery. Going from 10 to 12 feet costs about $200; going from 12 to 20 costs well over $1,000 and probably an extra truck, since a tandem carries only 13 to 15 tons. The corollary is that width is the wrong place to economise below the minimums but the right place to be honest about ambition. A 10-foot drive that is genuinely wide enough beats a 14-foot drive built 2 inches too shallow because the budget ran out. Edges, Shoulders and Real Usable Width
On a gravel drive, the width you order is not the width you keep. Loose stone migrates outward under tyres, and an unedged drive loses several inches per side over a few years while growing a fringe of stone in the lawn. Build in the loss: order to your target width plus 6 inches, or install edging — timber, steel, or a shallow shoulder trench — and hold the line permanently.
Two more details that decide whether the full width is usable. Crown the surface 2 to 4 percent from the centre so water sheds to both edges instead of running down the middle and cutting a channel. And keep planting back at least 2 feet from the edge; overhanging shrubs shrink the effective width far faster than any amount of erosion, and drivers will drift toward the open side to avoid them.
