Stone Steps Calculator Guide
Stone steps are designed backwards: the slope dictates the geometry, the geometry dictates the step count, and only then does anyone order material. The governing numbers are ancient and non-negotiable — outdoor risers of 6–7 inches and treads of 12–14 inches, slightly gentler than indoor stairs because strides stretch out in open air. This calculator prices the layer that makes those numbers permanent: the compacted crusher run base under the treads, entered as total run × step width × base depth.
Consistency outranks the exact dimension you choose. Human legs memorize a staircase within two steps, and a single riser that runs an inch tall is the one that catches toes for the life of the stairway. Divide the total drop into equal risers, even if the result is 6.3 inches instead of a tidy 6.5.

Measure the drop with a level board and a tape from the top of the slope to the bottom landing, then check that the computed run actually fits the hillside. A slope too steep for the run needs the path to traverse at an angle — or a landing partway that resets the rhythm.
A Base Under Every Tread
Steps fail one at a time, and always the ones set on loose fill. Cut each step’s pocket into undisturbed ground, then compact at least 6 inches of crusher run in the pocket before any stone arrives — on soft or made ground, deepen it. Set the tread, check it for a slight forward pitch of about a quarter inch so rain sheds off the nose, and let each tread overlap the stone below by roughly 2 inches; the overlap turns eight separate stones into one interlocked staircase.
Single slab treads — one massive stone per step — are the forgiving format for a first build, since every step is its own complete structure on its own pad. Steps built up from stacked wallstone climb steeper grades and use smaller, cheaper stone, but each course must be fitted as carefully as a miniature wall, and the base has to be flawless because there are more joints to telegraph any movement.
