An L-shaped driveway is two rectangles. A kidney-shaped bed is an oval plus a bump or minus a bite. When a section defies geometry entirely, overlay an imaginary grid of 5 × 5 ft squares and count them — full squares count as 25 sq ft, partial squares as half.

Field Techniques That Make Measuring Easier

  • Outline curves with a garden hose before measuring — it holds the final shape while you take widths.
  • Chop long curves into 10-ft segments and treat each segment as straight; the error becomes negligible.
  • Take widths every few feet on tapering areas and average them rather than trusting one measurement.
