Boulder Weight Calculator Guide
Boulders are the material where intuition fails hardest, because weight grows with the cube of the diameter. Double the boulder and you get eight times the weight; the friendly 18-incher you rolled into place by hand has a 3-foot cousin that outweighs a grand piano. The estimate behind this calculator treats a boulder as a sphere — volume = π × d³ ÷ 6 — then multiplies by a 0.66 irregularity factor (real rocks have flats and hollows) and the rock’s solid density, 168 lb/ft³ for granite.
Measure the diameter as an average of three readings — longest axis, shortest axis, and height — because almost no boulder is round, and the longest dimension alone overstates the weight badly. With that average in hand, the size-to-weight ladder below is worth memorizing before you visit a stone yard.

Notice the cliff between 1 and 2 feet: the weight octuples from a comfortable carry to a machine job. That 2-foot threshold is where most DIY boulder plans quietly die — 464 lb will not roll uphill, will not be lifted by any number of enthusiastic friends, and will absolutely find a foot if it gets away on a slope.
Moving and Placing Boulders Safely
- Buy placement, not just delivery. Suppliers with boom or crane trucks can set a boulder exactly once for a modest fee. A boulder dropped at the curb becomes your problem forever — confirm truck access to the final spot before ordering.
- Bury the bottom third. A boulder sitting on grade looks delivered; one nested into a scooped depression looks geological. The burial also locks it against tipping, which matters wherever children climb.
- Use rollers and ramps, never backs. For the 200–500 lb class, pipe rollers over plywood and a pry bar move a boulder a surprising distance — slowly, with the rock never higher than your shins.
- Check the invoice against the estimate. Boulders are priced by the pound or ton. If a “2-foot” boulder is billed at 900 lb, either it’s denser than granite or it’s closer to 2.5 feet — this calculator gives you standing to ask.
