The band of ground within ten feet of your foundation decides whether your basement stays dry. Most water that ends up inside a house did not come through a crack in the wall by itself — it was delivered there by a negative grade, a downspout dumping at the corner, or a bed of mulch holding moisture against the siding. Fix the surface and you fix most of the problem without touching the foundation.
The target is simple and the code minimum is worth memorizing: the ground should fall away from the wall at 2 percent or more — 6 inches of drop over the first 10 feet. On top of that grade, a band of washed stone gives you a surface that sheds splash, does not hold moisture against the wall, and does not need replacing every two years.
Grade Comes First, Stone Comes Second
Stone does not create drainage. It sits on whatever slope is underneath it. Pour four inches of beautiful washed river rock onto ground that tilts toward the house and you have built an attractive funnel — worse than bare soil, because now the water infiltrates freely instead of running off.
The grade has to be built in soil, not in stone. Around most houses the backfill placed during construction has settled over the years, sometimes several inches, which is why perimeters that drained fine at the ten-year mark do not at the twenty-five-year mark. Use compactable soil to rebuild it — a clay-loam fill, not topsoil, which is too organic and settles again. Size it with the fill dirt calculator and finish with a thin skin of topsoil only where you want grass.
- Check the existing grade with a level and a string. Run a string line from the foundation out 10 feet, level it, and measure the gap to the ground at the far end. You want at least 6 inches. Less than that, or a gap that shrinks as you go out, means you have work to do.
- Strip the sod and any existing mulch or stone. You need to build the slope in the soil layer, so anything decorative has to come off first. Set aside stone worth reusing.
- Add and compact fill in 4 to 6 inch lifts. Build the high point tight to the foundation and rake it out to the target slope. Compact each lift — uncompacted fill will settle back into a negative grade within two seasons.
- Hold the finished grade 6 inches below siding, brick ledge, or the sill plate. Burying siding traps moisture against wood and creates a highway for termites. If you cannot get both 6 inches of clearance and 6 inches of fall, extend the graded area further out rather than raising it higher.
- Lay the stone band on the finished slope. Two to three inches deep, 18 to 24 inches wide along the wall, following the same slope the soil has.
- Test it with a hose before you call it done. Run water at the base of the wall for a few minutes and watch where it goes. It should visibly move away from the house, not pool anywhere along the band.
Warning: Never solve a negative grade by adding stone until it looks level. You will bury the siding, void the 6-inch clearance, and hold water higher up the wall than before. Regrade in soil, then add stone as a surface course only.
Washed Stone Beats Mulch Against the House
Organic mulch against a foundation looks good for about eighteen months. It holds moisture right where you least want it, breaks down into soil that raises the grade until siding clearance is gone, and invites termites and carpenter ants along the exact surface you want them to avoid.
Washed stone does the opposite. Water passes through and keeps moving down the slope, the material does not decompose or change the grade, and it gives insects nothing to eat. Keep an 18 to 24 inch band against the wall even if the rest of your beds are mulched.

Size a perimeter band with the stone coverage calculator. As a quick check, one cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch, so at 3 inches deep it covers 108 square feet — roughly 65 linear feet of a 20-inch band. Downspouts Do More Damage Than Anything Else
A thousand square feet of roof sheds about 620 gallons in a one-inch rain. If half of that leaves through one downspout that discharges at the corner of the house, you are pouring 300 gallons directly into the backfill zone — the loosest, most permeable soil on the property, sitting right against your foundation wall. No stone band survives that, and no perimeter grade compensates for it.
Extensions are the cheapest high-value fix on this entire list. Get the discharge at least 4 to 6 feet from the wall, and further on clay or where the grade is flat. Rigid extensions or buried solid pipe running to a daylight outlet both work; flexible roll-out extensions work too but tend to get moved for mowing and never put back. Put a splash block or a small apron of larger stone at the outlet so the discharge does not scour a hole in the lawn.
Pro tip: Buried downspout lines should use solid pipe, not perforated. Perforated pipe leaks concentrated roof water into the soil along its whole run, which is the opposite of what you want near a foundation. Save perforated pipe for a French drain, where collecting water is the point.
When You Need a Real Drain, Not Just Stone
Surface work handles surface water. If your problem is subsurface — a persistently wet corner, a hillside pushing groundwater at the house, or seepage that appears in the basement well after the rain has stopped — you need something that collects and carries water away, not just a band of stone.
That is a French drain: a trench 12 inches or deeper, 4-inch perforated pipe laid holes-down, backfilled with washed #57 stone, the whole trench wrapped in filter fabric, sloped at 1 percent or better to a daylight outlet or a dry well. Run it on the uphill side to intercept water before it reaches the wall. Size the stone and pipe with the French drain calculator and follow the build order in French drain installation. If the wet ground extends well beyond the foundation, start with fixing yard drainage so you address the whole watershed rather than one wall.
One caution: if water enters below grade and the exterior grade is already correct, the problem may be the original foundation drain or waterproofing membrane — an excavation job worth a professional opinion first.

Get three things right and most foundation water problems go away. Grade the soil to fall 6 inches over the first 10 feet, keeping the finished level 6 inches below siding. Use a band of washed #57 or river rock 18 to 24 inches wide against the wall instead of organic mulch. And extend every downspout 4 to 6 feet past the backfill zone with solid pipe. Stone is the finish layer on a correct grade, never a substitute for one.
