If a plan set, a building inspector or a contractor says “just use 57s,” they are talking about the most widely specified aggregate in North America. It shows up under concrete slabs, inside French drains, around foundation footings, in septic fields and on driveways, and it does all of that with one physical property: it drains, permanently, without ever locking up.
That last part is where most people get into trouble. #57 stone is not a base material in the structural sense, and no amount of plate compactor time will turn it into one. Understanding why is the difference between a slab that lasts and one that cracks.
Buying tip: Always confirm you are getting washed #57 and not a dirty or “pit-run” version. Unwashed stone carries fines that migrate into the void space and destroy the drainage you are buying it for. If the pile looks dusty or the water running off it is cloudy, reject the load.
What the Number Actually Means
The number is a gradation designation, not a size. It comes from the ASTM D448 and AASHTO M43 standard size charts, which define how much material must pass through each sieve size in a given blend. Number 57 specifies a blend that passes a 1-1/2 inch sieve, is mostly retained on a No. 4 sieve, and is nominally sized 1 inch down to 1/2 inch. It contains essentially nothing below the No. 8 sieve — no sand, no dust, no fines.
That is why the same designation means the same product in Georgia and Ohio, whether the rock is granite, limestone or trap rock. The number describes the sieve analysis; the quarry supplies whatever rock it has. Here is where #57 sits in the family:

Open-Graded: The 36–42% Void Space
#57 is an open-graded aggregate. Because the small particles that would fill the gaps between the large ones have been washed out, a placed layer of #57 stone is 36 to 42 percent air by volume. Water enters at the top and runs straight through at rates measured in hundreds of inches per hour. It is, functionally, a rock sponge that never fills up.
Contrast that with a dense-graded material like crusher run, #411 or 2A modified, which deliberately includes everything from 3/4 inch down to stone dust. Those fines fill the voids, and under a compactor the whole matrix wedges together into a dense, hard, load-bearing mat with very low permeability. Dense-graded materials are strong and wet; open-graded materials are dry and loose.
The practical upshot is that #57 has a stable, repeatable void volume you can design around. Engineers use it as underground stormwater storage precisely because they can count on roughly 40% of the trench volume being available for water.
The Five Main Uses
- Under concrete slabs and footings. A 4-inch layer of #57 breaks capillary rise, gives the slab a uniform bearing surface, and lets water that finds its way underneath drain out rather than sit and heave.
- French drains and drainage trenches. Wrapped in geotextile fabric around a perforated pipe, #57 is the standard backfill — large enough to keep the pipe perforations clear, small enough to place easily. See our drainage stone guide for size selection by application.
- Foundation and retaining wall backfill. It relieves hydrostatic pressure against the wall by giving water a path down to the footing drain instead of a place to build up.
- Driveway top course and surfacing. The angular faces knit together enough to stay put, and the open structure means no mud and no puddles. It does move under tires more than dense-graded material, which is a trade-off you accept for drainage.
- Concrete aggregate and septic leach fields. It is a standard coarse aggregate in ready-mix, and its permeability makes it the specified stone for septic drain fields in most jurisdictions.

Why It Can Never Be a Compacted Structural Base
Compaction, in the engineering sense, means reducing air voids by rearranging particles of many sizes so the small ones pack into the gaps between the large ones. That requires a range of particle sizes and, critically, fines to act as the wedge. #57 has neither.
Run a plate compactor over #57 stone and the individual pieces shuffle into their tightest arrangement in a couple of passes — that is consolidation, and it happens almost immediately. After that, nothing further occurs. There is no density gain, no strength gain, and no proctor value to test against. The layer remains a loose matrix of stones locked only by friction against each other.
That matrix is stable enough to carry load vertically when it is confined on all sides — which is why it works fine under a slab, inside a trench or behind a wall. What it cannot do is resist lateral spreading at an unconfined edge, or hold a precise elevation under a rolling wheel load the way a dense-graded base can. The one legitimate exception is a properly engineered permeable pavement system, where #57 forms the open-graded reservoir course, a layer of #4 or #2 sits below, and #8 chips form the bedding. That design works because the whole system is built to be open-graded, fully confined by edge restraints, and detailed by someone who accounted for the void ratios. It is not the same as skipping a base course.
Bottom Line
#57 stone is a washed, open-graded, 1/2 to 1 inch aggregate with about 40% void space. Use it anywhere water needs to move — under slabs, in drains, behind walls, in leach fields — and anywhere a clean, mud-free, free-draining layer is the goal. Do not use it as a compacted structural base, and do not expect a compactor to change that.
