An arena is not a sandpit. It is an engineered three-layer system, and almost every complaint you hear about footing — it is deep, it is dead, it rides hard, it holds water — comes from one of those layers being wrong rather than from the sand on top. Most owners spend the whole budget on the visible layer, then wonder why it never rides right.
The footing is what the hoof interacts with. Underneath it is a base, firm and uniform enough to stop the sand disappearing into the ground. Under that is a compacted sub-base that carries the load and gets water away. Any of the three failing shows up as a footing problem.
The arithmetic matters here. A 20 by 60 m dressage arena is roughly 12,900 sq ft. At 3 in of footing that is about 120 cubic yards of sand, or 180 tons at 1.5 tons per cubic yard. Getting the depth wrong by an inch is a 40 ton mistake.
The three layers and what each one does

The base is the part people underinvest in and the part that decides whether the arena is usable in April. It must be dense-graded material — crusher run at roughly 1.55 tons per cubic yard — compacted in lifts until it is genuinely hard. Open-graded stone like #57 drains freely and never compacts to a dense mass, which makes it excellent under a driveway and wrong as an arena base, because sand migrates straight down into the voids.
Pro tip: You should be able to drive a loaded truck across the finished base and leave no rut. If a pickup marks it, a cantering horse will punch through it, and the footing above will develop the hard-and-soft patchwork that riders describe as inconsistent.
What makes a good footing sand
Sand is not a single product, and the bag at the builders’ merchant is not what you want. Four properties decide how a sand rides.
- Particle shape. Sub-angular is the target. Fully rounded river sand rolls under the hoof and rides loose and unstable. Sharply angular manufactured sand packs hard and abrades. Sub-angular grains interlock enough for support while still yielding.
- Gradation. A well-graded medium sand, broadly in the 0.05 to 2 mm range with a good spread of sizes, holds together. Uniform single-size sand behaves like dry ball bearings.
- Silt and clay content. Keep fines low — under about 5 percent for an outdoor arena. Too many fines means dust indoors and a surface that turns greasy when wet; too few and the sand will not hold moisture at all.
- Hardness. Soft limestone or shell sands break down under hooves and turn to dust within a couple of seasons. Silica-based sands last far longer.
Washed concrete sand is the common, affordable starting point and rides well when the base is right. Purpose-screened arena sands cost more but arrive with a gradation report, which is worth a great deal when you are buying 180 tons of something. Additives: fibre, felt and rubber
Blending 5 to 10 percent by volume of synthetic fibre into the sand knits the grains together, cuts displacement and adds shear strength. It is the most cost-effective upgrade to a plain sand arena and reduces watering demand. Rubber crumb adds cushion for jumping but floats to the surface and needs regular blending. Wood products break down and turn acidic — avoid them.
Depth by discipline
Depth is a compromise between cushion and support. Too shallow and concussion goes straight into the leg; too deep and the horse works against the surface every stride, which is how suspensory injuries happen. Very few disciplines need more than 4 in of footing.

Materials and equipment
- Crusher run or dense-graded aggregate for the base, ordered by weight
- Screened footing sand with a sieve analysis, plus fibre if budgeted
- Perimeter drainage: perforated pipe, washed stone and geotextile
- Vibratory roller or heavy plate compactor, laser level or transit
- Box blade or purpose-built arena drag, and a water truck or sprinkler system
- Timber, rail or bank kickboards to contain the footing
Building the arena
- Site it where water is not already going. A slightly elevated spot away from hillside runoff beats a convenient flat hollow. Cut an interceptor swale uphill if surface water can arrive from above.
- Strip all topsoil and organic material. Everything soft comes out to firm subsoil. Organics rot, compress unevenly and are the origin of most long-term settlement and soft spots.
- Shape and compact the sub-base to slope. Crown the centre or run a consistent 1 to 2 percent fall to one side. Compact with a vibratory roller until the surface stops moving under the machine. A flat sub-base means standing water, and standing water means a base that never sets up.
- Install perimeter drainage before the base. Perforated pipe in washed stone wrapped in geotextile along the low side, daylighted well clear of the arena. This is cheap now and impossible later.
- Place the base in two compacted lifts. Two lifts of 2 to 3 in of crusher run, watered to near optimum moisture and rolled until dense. Check level as you go — every irregularity in the base shows up as an inconsistency in the ride.
- Prove the base before any sand touches it. Drive it, walk it, hose one corner and watch where the water goes. Fix every low spot and soft patch now. Once footing is spread, base repairs mean stripping and stockpiling 180 tons of sand.
- Spread footing in two passes to depth. Half the depth, drag it out, then the second half. Working in passes gives you a far more even thickness than trying to hit 3 in in one go. Measure with a probe on a 20 ft grid rather than trusting the eye.
- Blend fibre in as you spread, not on top. If you are using fibre, add it during the second pass and drag it in from multiple directions. Fibre laid on the surface migrates for months and never fully mixes.
Never compact the footing layer. Compact the base until it is unyielding, then leave the sand loose. Riders who roll their footing to “settle it” end up with a hard, concussive surface that has to be ripped and re-dragged.
Dust control and moisture
Moisture is what makes sand behave. Footing at the right moisture content binds slightly, resists displacement and produces no dust. Dry footing rides loose, throws respirable dust that is genuinely bad for both horse and rider, and abrades faster because the grains grind against each other.
Water is the cheapest answer — light, frequent applications rather than an occasional soaking, ideally through sprinklers so it is not a chore anyone skips. Where watering is impractical, magnesium chloride draws moisture from the air, though it needs reapplication and is hard on steel fittings. Avoid used motor oil and similar folk remedies entirely.
Troubleshooting a bad-riding arena
It rides deep and horses labour
Probe the depth on a grid. Nine times out of ten the answer is too much sand, built up by years of well-meant top-ups or piled along the track by dragging. Stockpile the excess and re-establish a consistent 3 in. If the depth is right, the sand is too uniform or too rounded and needs fibre blended in.
Hard spots, soft spots and holes
Inconsistency is a base symptom. Sand thinning on the track while corners stay deep means the base is high or the drag is pushing material outward. Persistent wet spots mean slope or drainage failure. Both need the sand pulled back and the base repaired — more footing over a bad base hides it for one season.
The footing keeps disappearing
Sand migrating downward means the base was built with open-graded stone, or without a separating geotextile. Footing is also lost over the edge where no kickboard contains it. Woven geotextile between base and footing fixes migration permanently on a rebuild.
Maintenance that keeps it right
- Drag regularly and vary the pattern. Always dragging the same direction builds banks on the track and strips the centre.
- Set drag depth just above the base. Teeth that bite into the base pull aggregate up into the footing and wreck both layers.
- Pull material back off the track twice a year and redistribute it before topping up with new sand.
- Remove manure promptly. It breaks down into fines, and fines turn footing dusty and greasy.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using open-graded stone as the base. It never compacts dense and swallows your footing.
- Buying sand without a gradation report. You are ordering by the hundred tons; ask for the sieve analysis.
- Building on a flat pad. Without 1 to 2 percent fall, water sits and the base softens.
- Adding depth to fix a hard ride. If it rides hard, the base is too close or the sand is compacted — more sand just makes it deep and hard.
