A mortared stone wall looks like the serious option. It is solid, sharp-jointed, obviously permanent, and it is what most people picture when they imagine a stone wall. It is also the version that fails most often in a home landscape, because mortar turns a flexible pile of stone into a single rigid object that has to survive everything the ground does to it.
Dry-stack — stone laid without mortar, held by weight, friction and careful fitting — is the older technique and, for most garden and retaining applications under four feet, the better one. It drains through itself, moves with frost instead of fighting it, and when a section does shift you fix it by hand in an afternoon rather than calling a mason.
Build dry-stack for any garden or retaining wall under 4 feet, in any climate that freezes, and for anything you want to build yourself. Choose mortared only for low decorative walls, seat walls, veneer over a structural core, or where you need a genuinely solid, climbable, water-shedding face — and hire a mason with a proper footing.
Cost: Mortar Roughly Doubles It
Dry-stack walls run about $25 to $55 per face square foot installed, depending on stone type and how much fitting the material demands. Mortared walls run $45 to $90 for the same face area. The stone itself costs the same; the difference is labor, plus a poured concrete footing that a dry-stack wall does not need.
That footing is the hidden line item. A mortared wall must sit on a continuous concrete footing carried below the local frost line — often 36 to 48 inches deep in cold regions — because the wall is rigid and cannot tolerate differential movement. That is excavation, forms, rebar, concrete and a curing delay before a single stone gets laid. On a 40-foot wall it can add several thousand dollars before the visible work starts.

Water and Frost: The Real Divide
Why dry-stack survives winter
Water is what destroys retaining walls, and it destroys them by two mechanisms: hydrostatic pressure pushing from behind, and freeze-thaw expansion inside the wall itself. A dry-stack wall is immune to both by design. Water that reaches it drains straight through the open joints and out the face, so pressure never builds. When the ground heaves in January, the individual stones shift a fraction of an inch relative to each other and settle back in spring. Nothing breaks because there is nothing rigid to break.
This is why 200-year-old dry-stone walls are still standing across New England and northern Britain with no maintenance beyond an occasional restack. The technique tolerates ground movement rather than resisting it.
Why mortar cracks
Mortar makes the wall one solid piece and, critically, one waterproof piece. Water that gets behind it — from rain, irrigation or a saturated slope — has nowhere to go, so hydrostatic pressure builds against the back face until something gives. Meanwhile water that soaks into the mortar joints freezes, expands and spalls them apart from the inside. A mortared retaining wall without a properly built drainage system behind it is not a question of whether it fails, only when.
A mortared wall can be built to last, but it needs the full package: a footing below frost depth, a gravel drainage chimney behind the wall, filter fabric, a perforated drain line to daylight, and weep holes through the face at regular intervals. Skip any one of those and the wall inherits every disadvantage of rigidity with none of the protection.
DIY Feasibility
Dry-stack is one of the few genuinely DIY-able masonry skills. There is no cure time, no mixing, no working against a clock, and mistakes are reversible — if a stone does not sit right, you lift it and try another. The learning curve is real but short: you are looking for stones that touch at multiple points, and you follow one rule above all others, one stone over two and two over one, so vertical joints never stack.
Get the geometry right and the wall builds itself. Base thickness should be at least half the wall height and never less than 12 inches. Batter the face back into the slope about 1 inch per foot of height. Set every stone with its long axis pointing into the hill, not along the wall, and place a full-depth tie stone every few feet to bind front to back. Mortared work is a different proposition. You are managing mix consistency, working time, joint tooling and cleanliness, all while the material sets. Bad mortar work is glaringly visible and cannot be undone. Unless you already have masonry experience, this is a job to hire out.
Stone choice also differs between the two methods, and it matters more than people expect. Dry-stack rewards flat, blocky material with parallel top and bottom faces — the more surface contact between courses, the more friction holds the wall together. Mortared work is far more forgiving of irregular shapes, because the mortar fills the gaps that dry-stack would need a hand-fitted shim for.

Repairability Over Decades
A dry-stack wall degrades gracefully. A section belled out by a tree root or nudged by frost is a localized problem: you take that part down, reset the stones, and the repair is invisible. No special tools, no colour-matching, no contractor. Rural walls have been maintained this way for centuries by people who simply walked the line each spring and restacked what had moved.
Mortared walls degrade all at once. A crack means the footing moved or water got in, and by the time it is visible on the face the damage is structural. Repointing is skilled work, fresh mortar rarely matches the weathered original, and a failed footing means demolition. This is the strongest practical argument for dry-stack in a residential setting: you can maintain it yourself, forever.
Height Limits and When to Call an Engineer
Any retaining wall over 4 feet needs engineering, and in most jurisdictions a permit. That threshold is not arbitrary — the lateral pressure from retained soil grows with the square of the height, so a 6-foot wall pushes more than twice as hard as a 3-foot one. It applies to both construction types, and it applies whether or not your neighbour got away with it.
Below that line, dry-stack is comfortably capable if the geometry is right. Above it, you are into engineered systems: geogrid reinforcement, segmental block, or a properly designed reinforced concrete wall with stone veneer. If your slope needs more than 4 feet of retention, terracing it into two shorter walls set apart by a planted bench is almost always cheaper, safer and better looking than one tall one.
Which Build for Your Wall
A 30-inch garden terrace holding a planting bed. Dry-stack, built yourself over a weekend or two. This is the technique’s home ground — free drainage, no footing, and the informal face suits planting.
A 20-inch seat wall around a patio. Mortared, or a mortared cap over a dry-stack core. Nobody wants a stone shifting under them when they sit, and a flat mortared cap is what makes a wall usable as furniture.
A 5-foot wall holding back a driveway cut. Neither, as a DIY job. Get it engineered, and expect a segmental block or reinforced system with a stone face.
A boundary wall on wet clay. Dry-stack, with a deeper gravel trench than you think you need. Rigid construction on clay that swells and shrinks is asking for a crack.
A wall you want to look formal and crisp. Mortared, or dry-stack built from sawn quarried block. Hand-fitted fieldstone will always read as rustic, and no amount of care changes that — if you want tight, uniform lines, buy dimensional stone or accept the mortar joint. This is one case where the aesthetic goal genuinely should drive the construction method.
Bottom Line
Dry-stack costs about half as much, drains itself, tolerates frost, can be built and repaired by a determined homeowner, and outlives mortared work by decades. Mortar earns its place on seat walls, decorative low walls and veneer — anywhere you need a solid surface rather than a retaining structure — and only when it is built on a proper footing with real drainage behind it.
