Bridge the gap between how you measure (cubic yards) and how suppliers sell (tons). These converters use material-accurate densities, because a yard of sand and a yard of lava rock differ in weight by more than double.

There is no universal answer to “how many tons is a cubic yard” — it depends on the material’s density, its moisture, and how tightly it packs. Crushed stone runs about 1.5 US tons per cubic yard, gravel 1.4, topsoil 1.1. Using one number for everything is how projects end up a truckload short or a pallet over.
Watch the units, too: a US short ton is 2,000 lb, but a metric tonne is 2,204.6 lb. Our converters show both, so a quote in tonnes from one supplier can be compared honestly against a quote in tons from another.
